She pulls away from me again. This time I let her go.

She walks out of my office, but before she goes, she turns around and says, “I love you too.”

Then she is gone, and I spend the rest of the day with a goofy smile on my face.

EPILOGUE

KAYLA

These days I find myself wanting to complain, but I don’t because I know I asked for this. In fact, I prayed for it for years.

My life is everything I could have ever imagined and more, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

It’s been two years since we scored the presidential debate that put us on the map and boy have things changed.

GNN is now at the point where it doesn’t need constant supervision. So Adam has pulled way back where the company is concerned and is juggling his duties here with his duties at Grant Media. In two and a half short years he’s achieved his goal of dominating the news world. GNN moves around in the ranking of the top news houses in the country, spending most of its time in the top five.

With GNN, the Grant Media Group has shifted into current affairs in a big way. Adam laid the groundwork and other senior staffers are shifting into news. They have acquired three other news houses across the country, and Adam is consulting with all of them.

He’s very busy these days and tries to be in Cleveland as much as he can, which is not nearly enough. So it’s probablygood that Brady and I moved in with him a year and a half ago, otherwise I’m not sure we would see him at all.

We now live in Pepper Pike, where Adam bought an honest to God mansion complete with tennis court, home movie theatre and swimming pool. Living in such luxury took a moment to get used to, but the novelty soon wore off and now our house is home. I was worried at first about Brady growing up with all this wealth, but ultimately I’m just glad that he has the best of the best. So now it falls on us to keep him grounded, and that’s a job I take very seriously.

“This is not a big problem,” I say to Kaleb, one of my producers, as I mediate a dispute between him and Davis, GNN’s Head of Logistics. “You don’t need to have three cars going to pick up three different guests. You can just have one retrieve all three. Aren’t they all coming in for the same show?”

“Yes, they are,” Kaleb says.

“And they all live pretty close to each other,” Davis chimes in.

“Even if we weren’t worried about saving money, it just makes sense to do it this way,” I say.

Kaleb tries to come up with an argument, because he wants each of his guests to be given the royal treatment. Of course, because he isn’t the one footing that bill. When he is unable to counter our points, he nods.

I dismiss both men and they leave my office.

I sigh. I can’t believe I have to deal with these petty squabbles. Last month, Arthur left us to go work for a start-up. He said he was looking for a challenge. I’m happy for him, but I miss him.

He suggested that I take over his role as General Manager of GNN.

It took some convincing, but when I was offered the job, I accepted. So while I am the General Manager, I still run the news division for now. I’m training my deputy, Caroline, to take over. When she’s ready, I will relinquish the position to her, but until then, I am wearing both hats.

Finally, the day is over and I can head home. Adam is back in town after two weeks away, and I have some big news for him.

I pack my stuff and head out, praying the entire time that I don’t run into anyone who wants something from me before I get to my car. However, just before I make it out of the main door of the building, someone calls my name.

I turn around and it’s Consuela.

She smiles and says, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you for a while, but you’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to track you down.”

“Sure, what’s up?”

“My contract is up next month and I was wondering what your intentions are concerning renewal.”

I know exactly what she means.

Since she and a couple of our other people attempted a coup two years ago, they’ve all been walking around on eggshells.

They misjudged the public reaction to Adam’s and my relationship. No one cared. Although GNN has risen sharply, no one individual stands out. All the capital they gained when they tried to leave has diminished. If we were to turn them out onto the streets, they’d struggle to find jobs. It wouldn’t be impossible, but it would be difficult. So I’m sure they would rather stay with us and enjoy our prosperity that deal with the precariousness of unemployment.
