He’s about to respond when a knock sounds from the door.
“Are you expecting anyone?” I ask with an eyebrow raised.
He doesn’t say anything. He just gets up and answers the door. When he pulls it open, Adam is standing there.
Although I want to say I’m shocked, I’m not.
I kind of suspected this was his plan when he told me he was coming into town. I knew he was going to try and orchestrate a meeting at some point, I just didn’t think it would be so soon.
The smile drops from Adam’s face as soon as he looks over Lucas’ shoulder and sees me.
Adam doesn’t move, but somehow gets awkward.
“Now, get in here,” Lucas says to Adam.
Adam takes a beat, and I know he is considering how far down the hall he’ll get before Lucas tackles him. In the end, he exhales deeply and walks into the room.
Lucas stands between the both of us. “I have heard enough about what happened from both of you. So I’m confident that I know everything I need to know.”
“Lucas, this isn’t cool,” Adam says.
“Well, if either one of you had listened to reason over the phone then I wouldn’t have had to fly all the way down here,” he replies.
I stand. “What do you hope to achieve from this?”
“Hopefully, by the end of this, you two will kiss and make up,” Lucas says.
“I doubt it,” I say.
“We will see about that.” Lucas turns to Adam. “You, you’re spoiled.”
“What?” Adam’s eyebrows shoot up as he is taken aback by Lucas’ accusatory tone.
“Yes,” Lucas continues. “You are spoiled. Maybe not in life, but in work. You haven’t had to deal with any major crises in your role at Grant Media. So it’s made you soft. You can’t cry and want to quit at every bump in the road. This Maurice guy punched you in the face so you knock him on his ass.”
“That’s what I told him,” I say, under my breath.
My eyes cut to Adam and one side of his lips pull up in a smile.
“Also, it wasn’t fair of you to have said all the things you said to Kayla. She had no way of knowing what her deputy wasdoing behind her back, because the woman was actively keeping it from her. You owe her an apology.”
“Damn, right he does,” I say.
Lucas turns his attention on me. “And you, you need to ease up on the doom and gloom when it comes to your career. You operate in extremes. You’ve invested so much of your identity in your career. So much so that anything that threatens your career sets you off in a tailspin. You need to find a way to separate yourself from your work. Your job isn’t who you are. I know who you are and that’s an amazing person. You should lean more into that.”
“That’s a very wise observation.” It’s Adam’s turn to take jabs at me.
Lucas rolls his eyes. “Honestly, the both of you deserve each other.”
My eyes move to Adam’s, and we both try our hardest to stifle a smile, but can’t manage it.
“Anyway, Kayla, my general point is, I don’t wish for GNN to become defunct anytime soon, but if it does, you’ll be fine. In fact, you’ll be more than fine. You’ll thrive. I mean, look what you’ve managed to achieve in just a few months.”
I fold my arms and cast my eyes downward to where I am worrying the carpet with the ball of my foot.
Lucas continues. “I know I wasn’t in support of this relationship from the beginning, but when I see the both of you together, it’s clear to me that you’re meant to be. Then add to that that you have a son. This isn’t something either of you should be quick to throw away.” He looks between the two of us, then grabs his coat and keys off the bed. “I’m going for a walk. Both of you, talk.”
He leaves.
