“I didn’t hear you pull up,” dad says.

“Captain Doyle dropped me off.”

The corner of my dad’s mouth curls up into a smirk. “He’s great isn’t he?”

“Yeah, he seems really nice.”

“How long did it take you to find out he’s my best bud these days?”

“Not too long, but it was a bit of a surprise.”

“A surprise? What do you mean? To him or to you?”

I swallow hard not sure if I’ve already started to put my foot in my mouth. Time for damage control.

“To me. He already knows you guys are best buds. I was just surprised you didn’t tell me.”

“I wanted you to be prepared. I didn’t want you slacking off thinking this was in the bag.”

“But it was, right?”

“Yeah, but still. I trust you but it’s better that you come in knowing that the two of us only have a professional relationship, and not a personal one.”

Mom looks at dad funny and I have to agree. My dad thinks he’s so clever sometimes.

“What?” My dad throws up his hands. “It’s not like she’s going to get to know him or anything. They’re just working together on the parade. They help each other out and that’s that.”

“Event planning is very relationship based, but I know what you mean, dad. You have to be professional at all times and always let the client know the boundaries of the working relationship.”

My dad laughs. “Boundaries. Clients. I’m going to tell Danny you called him a client. He’ll get a kick out of it.”

“Speaking of kick, I think I’m going to kick my shoes off and go soak in the tub for a minute.”

“What about your car?”

“We can get it later.”

“So you’re trapped here with us. No running off to hang with friends this visit.” My mom looks happy about that.

“I don’t have any friends around here, plus I just came here to see you two…and of course work on the parade.”

“You’re going to have so much fun working on the parade with Danny. You’ll get to see how much fun it is to live in a small city. There’s way less regulations to start with, and people are so much friendlier.”

“I’m sure it will be nice.”

I smile at my parents and head upstairs.

What won’t be nice is leaving once this is over, but then again how could I ever live in a little city like this? He’s really causing my thoughts to jump all over the place right now. I’m a big city girl…right? At least that’s what I always thought.

Yeah, sure. The local police chief with the sexy Irish accent from time to time who also happens to be my dad’s new best friend.

The guy that’s way older than me, way more experienced than me, and probably sees me as a bumbling barely out of college kid…although I swear he was attracted. It was beyond obvious.

I run the water for my bath, pondering the thought. What could happen anyway? Right…absolutely nothing.

But my mind isn’t having it. I picture us doing simple small town things…family things together and I can’t help but smile. Suddenly I feel a wetness on my thigh and I look down and see my pants are turning dark.

My eyes race around the room and there, right in front of me, the tub is overflowing. It takes a good five to ten minutes to fill up the tub and I just turned it on.

How long was I off in La La land thinking about him?

I guess I know the answer to my own question.

The only question now is how are were going to make this parade work when the only “work” my mind seems to be doing is planning out our future together.

I’m here to work with him to put together the St. Patrick’s Day parade, but it’s very clear I’ve already found the luck of the Irish…and the pot of gold at the end of my rainbow is Police Chief Danny Doyle.

CHAPTER 5

Danny

If I hadn’t seen her dad’s car parked in their driveway there’s no telling what I would have done.

I tried to cut it short. I was practically begging her to get out of my car so I didn’t do something I’d regret, something that would ruin my friendship with her dad forever.

Then she had to offer to shake my hand. Normally it would be innocent and customary…and something I’d done hundreds of times before in my life, especially after ride-alongs and business deals with private contractors.

But never with her. This was different. She is different.

The way her touch sent a fire through me, starting at my skin but quickly burning deep. Her hand was so small, so feminine, and fit so perfectly in mine.

Everything about her screamed “perfect woman.” Every primal instinct in me was dying to mate with her.

All I can think about is unleashing my raw, animalistic power over her. Mounting her and making her mine. Claiming her for the first time and forever.
