But I’m not going to just eat her, I’m going to devour her…make her mine. And no man will ever have a chance to get close to her again.

“You’re the party planner,” I say after turning all my attention back on her, and away from the mayor who is now cowering off to the side.

“Mack’s daughter. Yes.”

“Mack’s…?”

There’s only one Mack in this town and he’s my best friend. He’s the guy who just moved here a year ago from Boston, wanting a quieter life as he approached retirement. We quickly hit it off and now we go fishing, play basketball, and things like that together. He’s a great guy and he mentioned once he has a daughter, but he never said anything about this.

“Yes. He’s the one who lined up this interview for me.”

Oh no.

“He didn’t tell you, I was his…”

“You know this won’t be approved,” that high-pitched voice comes from the mayor again. “This is nepotism and it can’t be allow—“

I turn and give him a snarl again and he sinks back into his body. I just wish he’d crawl back into whatever hole he belongs in.

“I’ll get it approved, don’t worry about that.”

Her hand comes up and she offers me some sort of folder. “My qualifications.”

I swallow hard, trying not to rake my eyes over this angel’s body right now. She’s more than qualified all right, and she’s damn sure mine.

“You’re already hired.”

“We have to interview her first,” the mayor interjects.

“You said you had a full schedule. Let me take this off your plate, mayor. I’ll make sure to go over everything.”

“I’ve got some time. We—“

“I. I can take care of this. Not we.” I motion with my head to the door and the mayor sheepishly shows himself out.

I should invite her to sit down, or offer her a coffee, or something other than stare into those eyes of hers…but I can’t.

I hit the intercom button. “Janice, can you clear out the rest of my schedule today?”

“But Captain, you’ve got—“

“Thanks,” I say and release it, muting her voice.

I’ve got the most important meeting of my life. And she’s standing right in front of me. And there’s nothing I’ll let come between us.

Some opportunities and some people only come around once in a lifetime.

A woman like this? I don’t even know if once in a lifetime is right.

No one could compare to her. Not now, not ever.

Her name may be Marilyn and we are in Massachusetts, but not even Marilyn Monroe and JFK had what the two of us can have.

Will have.

Because I’m going to make her mine.

Starting right now.

CHAPTER 4

Marilyn

The warm leather of the police cruiser had beads of sweat rolling down my back as he drove us through town. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

It certainly wasn’t the way every other car deferred to his authority.

And it definitely wasn’t that police uniform he had on and the way his fingers wrapped around the steering wheel like they wanted to squeeze the life out of it every time I moved slightly in my seat.

And surely it had nothing to do with the fact that I was his best friend’s daughter. Definitely not that.

I bit my lip as we drove around the proposed parade route, wondering why my dad didn’t tell me Captain Daniel “Danny” Doyle was this big, this hot, and this masculine.

Then again why would my dad tell me these things? The craziest part is I almost feel like I’ve been set up on the best blind date in the history of blind dates. Sure the bar for such things is notoriously low, but I came into town with the lowest of expectations in general.

Danny hasn’t just smashed them, he’s taken my mind to another place entirely.

Growing up in Boston I thought I’d seen it all. But then when I went to the University of Massachusetts, or UMass as it’s known, in Amherst, I saw even more. And more was a lot of guys acting like they were hot stuff, when really they were just immature boys constantly displaying sophomoric behavior until they grew into men. But as I’d witnessed my professors and others around campus, and around my hometown, a lot of boys these days don’t ever grow into men…they just kind of stay in some kind of purgatory area where they’re basically boys in bigger bodies.

No thanks. Not for me. Plus I’ve always been more interested in making it for myself in today’s world. And I still am.

But now I’m more concerned with making something else entirely…and the thought of it is making my panties beyond moist.

I listen as Danny points out everything and his thoughts, but the best part is when he asks me what I have in mind and then he takes the time to actually listen to me without interrupting. That’s definitely a first. At UMass we were broken up into groups for projects quite often and I seemed to always end up grouped with guys who only seemed to mansplain everything as if they were delegating work, and that we weren’t a team.
