Callum kept sputtering as Ava and Macgrath headed out of the kitchen toward the front door.

"We'll touch base tonight and compare notes," Ava stated. She turned and gave me a pointed look. "Be sure to take breaks to eat and stretch. I don't want you passing out on me."

"Yes, Mother."

Ava shook her head. "You're rubbing off on her already, Callum."

After they left, I glanced up at Marcus. The entire day so far seemed surreal. "What's your job going to be?" I asked.

"Watching your back."

I liked the sound of that.
