Edmund and Ellen held hands, as if supporting each other.
Miss Hilversham looked at them severely. "You are truly married now?"
They affirmed.
"And you are happy?"
"Oh, yes." Ellen beamed as she looked at Edmund, who squeezed her hand.
Miss Hilversham studied them silently. Then she took off her glasses. "Then, from all my heart, I am glad that you have found your happiness." Her eyes went to her husband, who cooed at his baby. Her entire demeanour softened. "As I have found mine."

Anna the maid entered, curtsied, and folded her hands. "Mesdames et milords, begging a thousand pardons for the interruption. But a light nuncheon is served in the dining room. If you would deign to follow me, please."
"I say. She is a housemaid, really?" Edmund whispered to Ellen. "I would have mistaken her for one of the pupils here. Either that, or a countess."
Anna had overheard that. "I am, of course, a housemaid, milord." She folded her hands demurely. "Most definitely."
She curtsied.
