Fanny huffed. “Are you honestly surprised?”

“Damn it, Fanny.” Nick rubbed his shoulder. “No wonder my arm is so sore. It’ll probably be black and blue for weeks.”

Fanny shrugged, then closed the yellow parasol and propped it against her shoulder, where it belonged. “Think of it this way—an iron rod will prevent me from snapping it in two at my first fit of pique.”

“I suppose there’s that,” Nick grumbled.

Fanny wrapped her free arm around his neck. “And so long as you don’t do anything to anger me, then you won’t have anything to worry about, now will you?”

Nick caught her around the waist. “I’m going to take that to heart. This time, let’s try not to make a hash of things, shall we?”

Fanny smiled. “Now that is a good suggestion.”

Nick leaned down and kissed her then, right in the middle of the inn’s yard. Somewhere behind her, Fanny could hear Nat and Noah, as well as Billy and Becky, whooping and laughing.

But as she kissed the only man she’d ever really wanted to marry, Fanny didn’t mind.

It had taken sixteen long years. But this time, she and Nick were going to get things right.
