“I didn’t come here to fight.” I’m pretty sure all the fight has drained out of me. I can’t seem to win with this girl. I fuck something up at every damn turn.

She pushes past me, but I catch her arm.

“Let go.”

“No.”

“Let. Go.”

“I saw your face out there,” I say. “You were hurt.”

She laughs again, this time there’s a bitterness to it that bites. “No, Reid. I was pissed and annoyed that you’re in my house.”

“You were hurt,” I say again. “Because it matters. BecauseImatter.”

She rips her arm out of my grip and shoves me hard in the chest. I stumble back before I catch myself.

“You don’t get to twist this around.” Her voice is shaking now. “You fuck with me and then you turn around and flirt with someone else like it never happened.”

“You’re sleeping with my roommate!” I say. The nerve of this girl…

“And you’re sleeping with mine!” She goes to push past me again. Letting her leave would be the smart move. But I guess I’m not a smart man. I grab her arm again.

“Let me go, Reid.”

“You’re pissed. I get that.”

“You don’t get anything.”

“I get that you’re hurt.”

Her eyes flash. “I’m not hurt. I’m done.”

“No, you’re not.”

She pulls hard again, but I don’t let go. “What do you want from me, Reid? None of this means anything to you. So why are you pushing so hard?”

“It does.”

“Didn’t look like it out there. Or at the bar the other night.”

“I came here for you.”

“Bullshit.”

“You think I don’t want this?” I ask. “You think I’d come back if none of this mattered?”

She yanks again, and I step with her, not letting go. I grip her tighter.

“I came here for you, Lola.”

“Stop pretending.”

“I’m not pretending.”

“Then what the hell are you doing?”

My mouth opens. I want to explain. I just don’t know how.
