“We’re going to go out and stop the zombies, aren’t we? Help the survivors?”

Mason lifts his head. He raises an eyebrow, cynical, but I think he’s a little scared too, and he doesn’t know what to do with that. “Take down the Citadel?”

“No,” I say, keeping my own tone serious. When he fidgets, I wrap my legs around his hips again, letting him know I want him close. “I mean it. I want to do this with you. Is that what you want?”

Mason frowns. His gaze darts away and he chews on his lower lip for a second. “What if I don’t? What if I don’t want to help anyone outside of this town?”

He still won’t meet my gaze, and I fight the urge to smile. Deep down, I think he does want to help, though I know he’ll still put me before everyone else.

“Be selfish, then,” I say, and Mason looks at me, startled.

“Selfish?”

“If I’m happy, that makes you happy.”

“Yes.”

“You coming with me and doing this will make me happy, Mason.”

He huffs, but his lips twitch, and when he kisses me, I open my mouth and let him take control. My heart sings at the feel of him. He means what he says.

“You win, little lamb,” Mason says. “We’ll go save the populace. If that’s even what they want.”

“You don’t care about what they want.”

He grins and kisses me again. “No. No, I don’t. The only person I care about is you.”
