She was still a very pretty woman despite how drawn and pale her face was. Her blue eyes looked a little too large for her face as well. Some may have attributed those features to the conditions of the detention center and its effects on her body and mind, but she had always possessed those features. To me, Sofia looked virtually unaffected. She walked into the room with a cocky confidence that told me she didn’t believe she would be detained here for long.

She was led to the desk where she sat down in the chair opposite me. The guard backed off into the corner, but he didn’t leave the room. Sofia glanced back at him, and I didn’t miss the small smile she threw his way. He didn’t return it, but I wondered if he had in the past and his stony expression was for my benefit alone.

When Sofia turned to me, the corners of her mouth were turned up in an almost smile. It made my skin crawl. I leaned back in my chair, as far away from her as possible, and immediately began to question my decision to meet with her. She was nothing but a madwoman. How could you expect to have a logical conversation with a madwoman?

“Missed me?” she asked, breaking the silence.

“You have some nerve.”

Sofia sighed and looked towards the side of the room. “You were always so prone to anger; every little thing made you angry.” She gave a girlish laugh and shook her head at me. “You need to be calmer, Reed.”

“Calmer?” I repeated incredulously. “There’s a crazy woman stalking my family, and you want me to be calm.”

I saw a flash of anger zip past her eyes and her head snapped up to meet my gaze. “I am not crazy,” she hissed at me. “I was only trying to protect you.”

I raised my eyebrows at her. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” she said. “I know you think that what I did was wrong—”

“It most assuredly was wrong—”

“But you fail to see the obvious; you always have.”

I gritted my teeth. “How on earth can you justify that excuse?” I asked. “How can you possibly think you were protecting me?”

“That bitch is nothing but a gold digging manipulator,” Sofia said, leaning in a little and lowering her voice so that only I could hear her. “She doesn’t care about you or your child. She’s just using you. I know it.”

“And what makes you think that?” I demanded.

“Experience.”

“Experience?” I repeated, and I could have almost laughed.

“I know a gold digger when I see one.”

“Do you know a delusional woman when you see one?” I asked. “Because you need to take a good look in the mirror.”

“She’s a fucking whore,” Sofia hissed, and I saw her eyes grow wild with jealousy. “Don’t you see she only wants your money? She’s not good for you, and she’s not good for your child.”

“My child?” I asked. “How dare you even speak to me about Jenna after what you tried to do to her.”

“What did I do?” Sofia asked, with wide, innocent eyes. “I did nothing to her.”

“You threatened to throw her off the balcony,” I reminded her. “You basically threatened to kill her.”

“Please, I would never do that.”

I stared at her for a long time, realizing that she was either completely insane or just a really, really good liar.

“You don’t remember getting mad at me for choosing to spend time with my daughter instead of you?” I asked calmly.

“You always put her first,” Sofia said, with a slight pout.

“She’s my child… she’s always going to be my first priority and a real woman, a sane woman, would understand that, like Taylor does.”

The sound of Taylor’s name seemed to set Sofia on edge. It was perverse of me, but I got pleasure from seeing her squirm the way she was now. It was my only way of biting back after everything she had put me through in the last few months.

“Taylor is a scheming whore—”
