“What does that mean?”

“Nothing,” I said quickly. “I’ll explain later.”

“You sound a little… out of it.”

“There’s a lot on my mind.”

“Anything I can help with?”

“Not at the moment,” I said.

“Is this about Taylor?” Jennifer asked suddenly.

I paused. In truth, it was about Taylor, but I knew that Jennifer was asking a different question altogether. “Why do you ask?”

“I guess I kind of hoped that there might be something going on between the two of you,” Jennifer admitted. “What with all the time you’ve started spending at home.” She paused.

“You like her, huh?”

“I do,” Jennifer said. “I think you’ve met your match in Taylor.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” I said. “Will you reschedule for me?”

“Of course.”

“Keep me posted though.”

“Will do.”

I hung up and took a deep breath. It seemed my fantasy of a happily ever after future with Taylor was going to have to wait until I sorted this mess out first. I thought about the first time, when Sofia had grabbed Jenna and threatened to fling her from the balcony. It was a threat she meant to see through; I could see it in her eyes.

I had wanted to press charges, but Sofia’s father had spoken to me and assured me that he was getting treatment for his daughter and that he would make sure she never bothered me again. I had taken him at his word and decided against it. Since I had the restraining order too, I had felt safe. But now that feeling had left me. I was worried again, but I was determined that this time I was going to keep them safe… both my girls, Jenna and Taylor.
