“Well done.” I nodded.
“I’m quite proud of myself,” Reed said. “I rarely win those battles with her.”
“You’re learning.”
“It seems I am,” he replied. “Luckily, I have a good teacher.”
He wrapped his arms around me and kissed me gently on the cheek. Then he poured me a glass of wine and placed it in my hand.
“By the way, I wanted to let you know that I’m looking into hiring a private detective.”
“What?” I asked, turning towards him in surprise. “Why?”
“We need to figure out who called you that day in the supermarket,” Reed said. “Whoever it was threatened you, and we can’t just let that go.”
“Oh,” I said.
“Oh?” Reed asked, with raised eyebrows.
I smiled. “I forgot about that.”
“You forgot about that?” Reed asked incredulously.
I shrugged. “I’ve just been so happy with you this last week, I suppose I forgot about everything else… including the crazy stalker who told me to watch my back.”
Reed smiled. “Shocked as I am by that admission, I can’t help but be pleased by the compliment too.”
“You should be,” I said. “It’s quite a high compliment.”
“Well, lovely as it may be, your safety is more important,” Reed insisted. “And if this really is Sofia I don’t want her getting within three feet of you or Jenna.”
“Do you really think she would do something like this again?” I asked. “Especially with an active restraining order out against her?”
“She’s capable of anything,” Reed said. “And even if I had my doubts, I’m not willing to take any chances. Sofia’s father is a powerful man in New York. Maybe she thinks she’s protected because of his connections.”
“How much can she get away with though?” I asked, feeling suddenly nervous.
“More than the average person,” Reed said. “Which is why I want to be cautious.”
“Okay,” I agreed.
Reed set aside his wine glass, and I did the same. He took both my hands and kissed them one at a time. “I’m going to protect you, Taylor… so I don’t want you worrying about any of this.”
“I’m not,” I said honestly. “I mean… I was a little scared in the supermarket after I got the call, but all that fear disappeared the moment I saw you.”
Reed smiled. “It’s like we were meant to find one another.”
I felt a pinch of guilt at my conscience as I thought about the one man we both had in common. But that was our past, right? There was no need to drag all that baggage into our shared present… or possibly our shared future.
“I feel the same way,” I said, pushing aside my guilt and leaning in to kiss Reed softly on the lips.
I felt his arms encircle me, pulling me in for a more passionate kiss, but I resisted him and pulled back. “We can’t… not here,” I said nervously.
“Jenna’s asleep,” Reed pointed out.
“She could wake up.”
“She was out cold when I left the room.”
