She trailed off, realizing that I might not want to be reminded of my past mistakes. I ignored that and opened my car door. “You’ll get in touch with Steinman’s agent and get back to me?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.” I nodded. “You going to stick around then?”

Jennifer smiled. “I don’t have a child to get back home to… or a man for that matter. I’ll stay and work.”

I looked at her pointedly. “You know, it wouldn’t kill you to get out there a little more.”

“Seriously?” Jennifer said, raising her eyebrows at me.

“What?” I asked.

“That’s just rich coming from you,” she said. “When’s the last time you went on a date?”

“Uh… recently.”

Jennifer narrowed her eyes at me.

“Okay, fine,” I conceded. “So it’s been a while.”

“So maybe you should start taking your own advice.”

“Easier said than done.”

Jennifer laughed. “Safe drive back home,” she said. “Give Jenna a kiss from me.”

I nodded and got into my car. The whole drive home I contemplated taking the same advice that I’d given Jennifer. But every time I pictured myself on a date, the woman sitting opposite me looked identical to Taylor. Who was I kidding? It was definitely Taylor I was imagining. I hated that I was so affected by her presence. I mean, it wasn’t like I was a twelve-year-old boy with his first crush. Though sometimes it felt that way.

When I walked into the penthouse, I looked around and realized that the dead silence suggested that no one was home. I called for Jenna and Taylor, but I got no answer. I checked the time. It was almost five-thirty, so I figured they would be back soon. I sat in the living room and turned on the television. Ten minutes later the door opened, and I heard Jenna’s little voice fill the apartment.

“Where have you guys been?” I asked, turning off the television.

“Daddy!” Jenna screamed excitedly, as she rushed into my arms. “You’re home!”

I picked her up and swung her around before setting her back down on the floor. Taylor was watching us with a smile on her face.

“We went to see the new Pixar movie,” she explained.

“Oh yeah?” I asked, looking down at Jenna. “And how was it?”

“So, so, so, so, so good,” Jenna said, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“If I’d known you would be here so early, I would have taken Jenna to the movie another day,” Taylor said.

“No, don’t worry about it,” I said. “Actually, the reason I came home a little earlier than usual is that I thought we could go out for dinner. What do you think?”

Jenna beamed with excitement. “Can Taylor come too?”

I was amused about how she didn’t commit to dinner with me before making sure Taylor was going to be included. “Of course Taylor can come,” I said. “The invitation was for both of you.”

Jenna did a little jump for joy and then she ran towards her bedroom. “Hey,” I called out after her. “Where are you going?”

“To my room,” Jenna shouted back. “To change.”

Taylor and I both laughed. “I think she’s excited.”

“This was a nice idea,” Taylor said. “But if I’m imposing at all—”
