Chapter Eight

Taylor

I was just about to head to my room when the front door opened, and Megan stumbled in. She was wearing a sparkly silver dress that hugged her voluptuous figure, and her blonde hair was braided on one side. She was wearing dark red lipstick and black heels with a four-inch heel.

“Wow,” I said, looking her up and down. “Va-va-voom.”

“Hmph, if that were really true then I wouldn’t be home alone, would I?” Megan asked, as she threw her bag on the coffee table and collapsed onto the sofa. “It’s twelve; how come you’re still up?”

“Well, I actually just got in myself… about fifteen minutes ago,” I told her.

Megan frowned and straightened up a little. “That’s a late work day for someone who looks after a four-year-old.”

“Reed had to work late today; he wanted me to watch her till he got home.”

“This guy is really running you ragged, huh?”

“It’s not like that,” I said. “He’s just really busy at work, and I don’t mind.”

“Sounds like he’s just palming off his kid on you.”

“He’s not,” I said, coming to his defense immediately. “He already feels really guilty about not spending enough time with Jenna. He’s a really amazing father, honestly.”

Megan cocked her head to the side and looked at me with narrowed eyes. “What?” I asked, growing self-conscious instantly.

“It sounds like you have a little crush, Tay.”

“I do not,” I said defensively, hoping that Megan wouldn’t see through the lie.

“Why don’t I buy that?”

“Please, I take care of his child,” I said, as though that were a legitimate reason. “I mean… he’s Jenna’s dad.”

“So?” Megan asked. “There’s no mother in the picture, is there?”

“Jenna’s mother died when she was a baby.”

“So he’s single?”

“I… don’t know,” I admitted. “Just yesterday Jenna mentioned someone named Sofia. I asked her who she was talking about, but she got all clammy and wouldn’t say anything more.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“My point is that Reed is my boss and he could very well have a girlfriend who I don’t know about,” I said. “It’s not like he’s under obligation to tell me.”

Megan smiled.

“What?” I demanded, not liking the pointed smile she was throwing at me.

“Sounds like you’re a little scared that this Sofia is a possible girlfriend.”

I opened my mouth to say something and then shut it at the last minute. I had given myself away a little by being baited into this conversation. I saw the look in Megan’s eyes, and I knew she wasn’t going to let up now that she sensed that I had a crush on my boss.

“You never did let me look this guy up,” Megan said, jumping to her feet and rushing towards her laptop.

“No. Megan, is that really necessary?”

“Definitely.” She nodded, ignoring me as she flipped open the screen and started typing fast. “I want to see what this guy looks like. Is he an older dad? A silver fox or a young hottie?”
