It was a clear dismissal, and I grabbed my bag and prepared to leave just as Jenna ran into the living room in her pajamas. She saw me with my coat and my bag, and her face fell.
“Taylor, don’t go,” she said, running to me and grabbing my legs.
I put my hand on her head. “I’ll be back tomorrow, sweetheart,” I said. “You’ll see me before you know it.”
“You promise?”
“Cross my heart.” I nodded.
Suitably appeased, Jenna let go of me, and I headed for the door. I was keenly aware of Reed’s eyes following me, but I didn’t want to make eye contact. He already intimidated me enough as it was. I took the subway home and I found Megan lounging on the sofa with a magazine when I walked in.
“Well, well, Mary Poppins returns,” Megan said, sitting up and discarding her magazine. “How was it?”
“It was great,” I admitted. “Honestly, it was really nice. Jenna is a darling. She’s sweet and polite and the furthest thing from bratty.”
“This was only the first day,” Megan pointed out.
I smiled. “True.”
“And what about the parents?” Megan asked.
“Uh, it’s only the father, remember?” I said, hoping my tone wouldn’t give anything away. “Jenna lost her mother when she was a baby.”
“Oh, right.” Megan nodded. “I forgot. Do you know what he does?”
“He’s in publishing,” I said.
“He must own the company to be doing so well,” Megan said. “What’s his name again? We can look him up.”
“Uh, maybe later,” I said. “I’m hungry; is there anything in the fridge?”
“Sure… I think so. Leftovers from yesterday.”
“How was your day?” I asked.
Having successfully distracted Megan, I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew that the moment Megan looked up Reed Davis, a picture would pop up and then I would never hear the end of it. He was ridiculously good looking, and I had been conscious of that fact throughout the entire interview the previous day. So much so that I questioned whether taking the job was even a good idea. It clearly wasn’t a good idea to be so attracted to your boss.
He was well past six feet in height, he was lean and well-built, and he had dark, seductive eyes and dark hair. He was very reserved, and a part of me got the feeling that he had hired me as a last resort, but I wasn’t sure if I was just reading too much into his stiff body language. I decided that if anything, I had a little crush that would fade with time. But I didn’t want to fan the flames of that crush by telling Megan. She would go berserk, and she would probably encourage me to do all sorts of inappropriate things.
“So… are you ready to go back tomorrow?” Megan asked.
“Sure.” I nodded. “I’m actually looking forward to seeing Jenna.”
I wasn’t lying either. I reallywaslooking forward to seeing Jenna tomorrow. And even though I would never say this out loud, I had to admit that I was looking forward to seeing Reed again too… no matter how fleetingly.
