He left us in the empty room, and I turned to Taylor with shock. “Oh my God,” I breathed.

“Don’t,” Taylor said quickly. “It can’t be…”

“Why not?” I asked. “The signs are all there; I just didn’t put two and two together.”

“You look excited,” Taylor said.

“I am excited.” I nodded, unable to keep the smile from my face. “Aren’t you?”

“I mean, we don’t know for sure that I’m pregnant,” Taylor pointed out. “And we aren’t even married yet.”

“That’s easily fixed,” I said.

“What do you mean?”

“How about we make a deal?” I said.

“Okay…?”

“You take the pregnancy test, and if you’re not pregnant, then we go back home and get on with our lives and plan for our wedding in a few months’ time,” I suggested.

“And if I am pregnant?”

“Then we go down to town hall right now, get ourselves a license, and get married.”

“Today?” Taylor asked, in shock.

“Today.” I nodded.

“But… can that even be done?” Taylor asked.

“I can pull a few strings,” I said, giving her a little wink.

“What about Jenna?” Taylor asked. “She’ll never forgive us if we get married and she’s not there.”

“I’ll make a call to Jennifer and ask the whole lot of them to meet us at town hall; then all our closest friends will be there for our wedding day. What do you think?”

“I think it’s crazy,” Taylor replied. “But I’m in.”

I laughed, just as a nurse walked in with a packaged pregnancy test. Taylor took a deep breath and went into the bathroom with the test. I stood outside the door, holding my breath the entire time. When she finally opened the door, I felt my breath rush out in a gasp.

“Well?”

“We need to give it some time,” Taylor replied.

She had the pregnancy test on a piece of tissue, and she set it down on the counter. Then she turned to me. “Reed?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

“I kind of want it to be positive,” she told me.

“Yeah?”

“Not just because I want a baby,” Taylor continued. “But because… I really want to marry you today.”

I smiled and leaned down to kiss her softly. “Me too, my love.”

“Shall we look now?” she asked.
