“Yes?”
“I want Taylor to be my mommy,” Jenna said. “I want her to live with us always. I don’t like when she leaves.”
“Me neither,” I admitted.
“Then you can ask her to stay with us.”
I smiled. “I will… once she wakes up.”
“You shouldn’t just ask her to stay with us.”
“No?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.
“You should ask her to marry you,” Jenna said.
I was amused at how straightforward her line of thought seemed to be. She had obviously thought about all this before.
“I should?”
“Yes.” Jenna nodded emphatically. “If you ask her nicely, then she’ll have to say yes.”
I smiled. “Then I’ll remember to ask really nicely.”
“Okay,” Jenna said.
“But Jenna, we should keep this a secret okay?” I said. “Just between you and me so that it can be a surprise for Taylor.”
“Okay.”
“And we need to wait till she’s fully recovered first… before I ask her,” I said. “Can you be patient and wait a little longer?”
“Okay,” Jenna replied, but she didn’t sound very enthusiastic.
“Thank you,” I said. “Are you done with your milk?”
“Yes, Daddy.”
“Okay, let’s go.”
I held her hand, and we walked back to Taylor’s hospital room together. Megan was still sitting outside the room when we got there, and she and Jenna started up a game of rock paper scissors while I slipped into the room. Jennifer was sitting down by Taylor’s bedside, and her head was resting on her arm.
“Everything okay?”
“Her vitals are strong,” Jennifer replied. “I wouldn’t worry; she’ll wake up when she’s ready.”
“I’m sorry I haven’t been able to help with work,” I said, sitting down beside her.
“Don’t be silly,” Jennifer said, waving away my apology. “This is far more important.”
“I want to take some time off once Taylor wakes up.”
Jennifer looked at me and cocked her head to the side. “What do you mean?” she asked. “How much time off?”
“Six months,” I said. “Give or take.”
Jennifer raised her eyebrows. “That’s a long time.”
“I know.”
