“Have you thought of names?” Jennifer asked.

I smiled. “No, I think names will come to me later when these kids are more a reality than a dream of my future.”

“Fair enough.”

“Taylor will make an incredible mother,” I said, mostly to myself. “In fact… she’s already a great mother.”

“You were lucky to have found her,” Jennifer said. “It’s not every day you meet your soul mate.”

“You believe in soul mates?” I asked.

“I think it’s possible.” Jennifer nodded. “Like most things, there’s always a chance that it could be real.”

“I never believed in things like that,” I said. “Soul mates and fate and destiny. But after meeting Taylor, it seemed like everything that brought us together, including our pasts, were indicative of a destiny that neither one of us were aware of.”

Jennifer smiled. “So have you been converted?”

“I don’t know; I don’t think I’ll keep the faith if Jenna and Taylor never come back,” I said. “Why would fate bring us together only to rip us apart?”

Jennifer frowned. “What makes you think Taylor won’t come back?” she asked.

I snapped out of my reverie and shook my head. The conversation I’d had with Taylor on the phone a short while ago came screaming back to me and I remembered the thing that she had said that had been disconcerting to me. It had been troubling me this whole time, but I hadn’t been able to put my finger on what it was exactly… until just now.

“Reed?” Jennifer asked, frowning at me. “What’s wrong?”

“She’s going to make sure Jenna’s returned to me,” I said, repeating what she had told me.

“What?”

“That’s what Taylor said to me when we spoke,” I said. “She said that she’s going to make sure that Jenna was returned to me safe and sound. She didn’t say that she was going to bring Jenna back, she said that she was going to make sure that Jenna was sent back.”

“Reed, I don’t understand—”

“She sounded so weird when we last spoke,” I said, as my mind joined the dots together. “She sounded resigned and determined and calm. She was so calm, and I thought that was odd, but I never questioned it. But now I see it.”

“See what?” Jennifer demanded. “Reed… you’re not making sense.”

I turned to her and grabbed her by the arms. “Don’t you see?” I asked. “Sofia got in touch with Taylor. She’s using Jenna as bait to get Taylor to come to her. It’s the only thing that makes sense. We know that she has Taylor’s number because she already called her in the park and threatened her with a gun.”

“You think… Sofia made contact with Taylor?”

“I’m sure of it,” I said. “I need to let the cops know. If they track Taylor’s phone, then they should be able to find Sofia… and Jenna.”

“How can you be sure that Taylor will be with Sofia and Jenna?”

“Because Sofia will want a meeting with Taylor,” I said, sure now of my own theory. “She feels they have a score to settle. And when Taylor spoke to me…. it sounded like she was saying goodbye to me. Something didn’t add up until right now.”

“Reed—”

“I have to call the cops,” I said, fumbling with my phone.

Within seconds, I had the police chief on the phone with me as I told him my theory. He seemed skeptical at best, but I was impatient and certain of my theory.

“I need you to find Taylor,” I said. “If you find her, then you’ll find my daughter and the woman who kidnapped her. I’m sure of it.”

“What proof do you have of that, Mr. Davis?”

“Nothing but my gut,” I replied hotly. “Nothing but my instincts. But that’s more than you have to go on at the moment, so I suggest you run with it. Because if you don’t, I’m going to sue you personally for incompetence and negligence, you understand me, sir?”

“I… I’ll get my men to start tracking this phone number,” the chief replied.

I hung up and took a deep breath.

“Well?” Jennifer asked. “What did he say?”

“They’re going to run with it,” I said.

“Let’s hope you’re right,” Jennifer said nervously.

“I am right.”
