Taylor laughed, and Jenna joined in. “Daddy doesn’t like cartoons,” she said, turning to Taylor. “He likes movies where there’s lots of shooting.”

“Not me,” Taylor said, shaking her head. “I like Disney.”

“Me too.”

I sat back and watched in amazement as my daughter was drawn into a full-blown conversation with a stranger. I saw how animated Jenna’s face was and I realized that I hadn’t seen that expression for a long time. I wondered if that was a failing on my part.

I tried to interject into the conversation, but I couldn’t seem to get a word in edgewise. Taylor’s eyes met mine over Jenna’s dark little head, and she smiled.

“You’re hired,” I mouthed to her.

Taylor’s smiled widened slightly, and she inclined her head in acknowledgment. I took a deep breath and prayed that this was going to be a decision that didn’t come back to haunt me later.
