Jenna turned, and she ran towards Millie. The two girls embraced excitedly, and I looked up to see Lily approaching me.

“Well, hello there,” she greeted. “Nice to see you after a long time.”

“I’m sorry I never got around to scheduling that playdate,” I said. “It’s been a busy few months.”

“Oh?”

“Jenna caught pneumonia,” I explained. “And she had to have a small surgery.”

“No,” Lily gasped.

I didn’t want to get into the whole Sofia stalking incident, so I just kept the conversation restricted to the surgery before we moved on to better topics.

“She seems to have recovered well,” Lily observed, as the two girls chased after each other on the jungle gym.

“She has.” I nodded. “It was fast too. Thank God.”

“How is Jenna’s father? Reed, was it?”

“That’s right.” I nodded. “He’s doing well. He usually comes with us to the park, but he’s working today.”

Lily smiled. “Well, now that Jenna is all recovered, we definitely need to set up a playdate.”

“For sure,” I said.

Lily and I sat down at one of the benches that directly faced the jungle gym so that we could keep an eye on the girls. We had just sat down when Jenna came running up to me. She pushed herself in between my legs and tapped her hands on my thighs.

“I’m thirsty.”

“Here you go,” I said, giving her a sip of water from her bottle. “Hungry yet?”

“No,” Jenna said, shaking her head.

“Please be careful; I don’t want you falling.”

Jenna smiled. “I never fall.”

“Don’t get cocky, kid,” I said, giving her a kiss on the forehead and sending her off.

I noticed that Lily watched us intently through the whole exchange. I smiled at her self-consciously. “What?” I asked.

“It’s just so strange; no one would ever assume you were just the nanny,” she admitted. “Even just now, the interaction between you and Jenna. It feels like you’re her mother.”

I smiled. “To be honest, sometimes it feels like I’m her mother.”

“What’s the deal with Reed again?” Lily asked. “Is he single?”

I laughed. “Are you trying to play matchmaker here?” I asked.

“I’m just curious,” Lily said. “The two of you have such good chemistry. It reminds me of my husband and me back when we were just getting to know each other.”

“Well, you don’t really have to play matchmaker,” I said. “Reed and I are sort of—”

“I knew it!” Lily said, clapping her hands together. “I so knew it.”

I laughed. “You’re one of the first people I’m telling,” I admitted.

“Well, I’m flattered.”
