“We have to get Levi,” I insist.
“Get him inside,” Kari yells, and I look up to see the security team hauling Levi’s unconscious wolf back toward the door.
I struggle to free myself from Tripp’s grasp, but Kari turns and pins me with a look that stops me cold.
“Remember what I said, Mac. Don’t come back here. Not unless you want your mate returned in pieces.”
The crowd doesn’t hear her, they’re too busy yelling about Thiago and Crigger and whatever lies Kari has made them believe about all of this. Tripp pulls me away. I stumble, my eyes flinging from Kari to Levi and back again.
A cry lodges in my throat.
I can’t leave, not like this. Not without him.
“Mac,” Tripp warns, his voice sharp.
Kari glances upward at something behind her and nods.
Still struggling against his attempt to move me, I shriek as the concrete beside me suddenly cracks open with the force of a bullet.
“Mac!” Tripp’s grip on me tightens as a second shot whizzes past my ear.
Someone in the crowd screams.
Tripp doesn’t ask again. Instead, he grabs me and lifts me off my feet, carrying me off into the throng of people. They part for us, letting us pass, but not before a third bullet finally finds its mark.
Pain explodes in my shoulder.
I jerk violently, and Tripp nearly drops me.
He curses, but I barely hear it over the roar of voices—and my own blood pounding in my ears.
Pain spreads, paralyzing me, until I hang like a sack of potatoes over Tripp’s shoulder. He hisses out a strained breath and breaks into a run, shoving people aside.
“Move,” he yells at them.
I can only hang limply and watch as Levi’s body disappears inside the alpha’s house. Kari follows without a backward glance.
She’s the enemy now.
If I live to face her.
