Kieran stilled and whipped his head around. “What did you just say?” he whispered.
“I said, you’re going to be a father, Kieran and our children will look up to you. I do not want them learning to spit on graves,” Naomi replied with a grin.
Kieran rested his large hand on her belly and asked, “Are you?”
Naomi placed her hand on top of his and replied, “I am. Sister Bisset confirmed it this morn. Twas why I have been feeling a little more tired than usual. The babe should arrive in harvest season.”
Kieran shouted for joy then pulled Naomi into his arms and kissed her deeply. His eyes glistened with unshed tears and the expression on his face was one she had never seen before. It was a mix of love and pure elation.
Kieran picked her up and carried her back to the bench. Then he sat and shifted Naomi into his lap. “We are going to have a bairn. I can scarcely believe it. You’ve made me so happy, love.” They sat in companionable silence. Just holding and caressing one another, content with the knowledge that they were starting a family and building a new life together.
After some time passed Kieran asked, “Can I at least spit on her grave at night when no one’s watching?”
“No! God can still see you in the dark.”
“All right,” he grumbled.
Naomi just shook her head and grinned at him. “Just remember, we’re here to aid Torstein and Samira.”
“I dinnae ken why? The man is a dunderhead and does not deserve her, and she is too stubborn for her own good.”
“It reminds me of two people I know,” Naomi said with a smirk.
“I was never a dunderhead,” Kieran replied.
“And I was never stubborn?” Naomi asked.
“All right, you’ve made your point, wench. But let’s just hope when they arrive and realize it’s a trap, they dinnae kill each other.”
