The target.I had to keep my face neutral so he wouldn’t see how badly the Red Right Hand wanted to rip his fucking face off. “I thought my personal relationship was the whole idea.”
Steel went back to the laptop. “The package now includes Roark Corp. Use your access to begin gathering evidence.”
“Is this the only reason you brought me in?” Jesus Christ the bureaucracy was idiotic. I could have had dinner with Sam and Hazel. Sam wouldn’t have looked at me like I betrayed her when I ducked out.Again. I wouldn’t have to come up with excuses when I got back. Steel was a goddamned idiot with stars in his eyes. He could smell blood in the water. Sure, I was the agent at the center of “the biggest case in history” but Steel would position himself as the hero. He’d take all the credit, all the accolades, all the promotions.
He probably already had visions of himself in the big office. Maybe a senate seat down the line.
He was putting the cartwaybefore the horse.
Especially if he thought I was going to use my best friend and lover to take down the life she just got back.
How far are you willing to go, Jace?
It was a good thing this monster had other plans. Todd would regret forcing me to live this life. Steel would regret underestimating me. All the work I put into creating a plan of my own would pay off in the end. I’d do it for Sam. Forus.
How far are you willing to go, Jace?
Steel glanced up one last time. “I want Roark on a platter. You have the means and opportunity. Don’t make me search for a motive.”
I was effectively dismissed. Dragged in just so Steel could feel powerful for a few minutes. It was a waste of my time and pointless. Yes, I would do my job and finally bring down Todd. Yes, I would happily use my connections through Sam to get evidence on the Feyereisens. But if he thought I was going to use Sam so he could add an extra feather to his cap, he was out of his goddamned mind. When this was all said and done I was finally going to have the life I wanted.
I played the games. All of them. I danced for Todd and I performed magic tricks for Steel. Their pet monster was out of his cage, bigger, badder, and scarier than they ever imagined. It was my turn to take control.
How far are you willing to go, Jace?
All the way, baby. All. The. Way.
