Veronica popped out of the bedroom she was sharing with Sam Sr., “Kids, why are we fighting?”
“Josie snuck up on a private conversation between me and my wife, and somehow, I’m the problem.” I could get used to hearing him call me his wife, especially when he said it with that hint of possessiveness.
Sam Sr., hearing the commotion, joined the rest of us in the hallway, snaking his arm around his ex-wife’s waist and resting his chin on her head as she leaned into him with a sigh. “What’s going on out here?”
Sam and his dad exchanged smirks, and Veronica spoke, “Josie, if you walk up on people, I guess you have a choice: ignore what they said or pretend you’re innocent and you’ve never used that language before.”
“He’s talking about his dick again, isn’t he?” Sam Sr. asked.
Veronica shrugged, “Probably, I don’t think any men mature past twelve years old. But I’m done breaking up fights between them.”
God, I loved watching Sam’s family pretend to argue. They’d all come so far since the summer, and I watched them heal together with every one of these interactions. It was hard to believe, as I watched Sam and his father interact that an argument between the two of them had been the cause of Sam showing up in my Uber drunk. Who would have thought that such a terrible night could have ushered in the best part of our lives?
The End.
