“It doesn’t? Dude ran out of an important meeting just to wipe your tears,” Beta says, annoyed at my questioning.
“Dude? Did you just call Rogue Alpha Prince a dude?” I stifle a laugh.
“Whatever,” he murmurs with a scoff. “My point is, Alpha is pussy whipped.”
I look up at him. Surprisingly, he looks honest again. Hmm. Am I missing something here? Cain, whipped?
When we enter the dining hall a few hours later, Cain is already seated at the long table and smiling at me from afar, leaning back in his throne-like chair. His black hair is ruffled, his torso naked, and his abs being touched by some laughing girl with breasts spilling dangerously out of her empire-cut dress.
Chapter 20 – True Mates
I
I’m a princess, it doesn’t affect me, I’m a princess, it doesn’t affect me, I’m a princess…I repeat my ‘school-time’ mantra that always helped me to maintain an unbothered expression.
I march to my spot on Cain’s right and sit without sparing him a glance. Beta follows me to the chair next to me.
Whipped, my ass!
I try to remain calm and start a conversation with Claudia, the beautiful brunette sex worker who always sits nearby. I know Cain used to fuck her, but she’s always nice to me. I like her, and she never flirts with him, so I kind of don’t mind their history.
She asks me something. But I can’t concentrate with the phony laugh from the girl, who I assume is a prostitute, whose hands keep wandering on my husband's half-naked, blood-spattered body. Sorry, a whore, as they call them here.
My chest feels hot inside, and I can’t stand it anymore. Her voice, her tits, her wandering hands…
“Shut the fuck up,” I draw through my teeth, with the sharp point of Cain’s sword pressed under her chin.
She goes silent instantly, her eyes stuck to the blade before her.
I spare Cain a glance, waiting for him to complain about me taking his sword without asking—but we both know he could have stopped me if he wanted to. He looks at me with amusement.
“Go away,” I add, not looking at the annoying girl. She seems to know I’m talking to her, because she scurries right away. I put the sword down.
“Someone’s jealous today,” Claudia chuckles, but chokes abruptly when Atlas comes to the table and sits on the chair between her and Cain.
“Gamma,” she says politely, staring at her plate.
“Claudia,” he replies dryly, loading his plate.
It’s the first time Atlas has come to eat with us since I moved here a week ago.
“What’s wrong with you two?” I ask with narrowed eyes.
“They were true mates,” Beta answers me.
I don’t like him, but I can always count on his loose tongue.
“Were? Past tense? What happened?”
This time, Claudia coughs and answers me with a bitter voice, “I made the mistake of telling him what I felt, and he rejected me with the next full moon.”
“Wait, you can do that?” I ask, and they all look at me like I’m crazy. Even Cain.
“Of course, you can,” says Atlas with a full mouth. “One of you just has to say the words of official rejection during a full moon, before you mark each other.”
“Does it hurt?” I can’t help but ask. I’m really curious, I’ve never heard about it. Well, now that I think about it, I might have heard some stories when I was a kid—I never thought anyone would ever want to do that, so I disregarded them immediately.
“No,” says Atlas.
