Not a minute later he puts Beta’s phone up to his face like for a video call, and I hear my brother’s voice.

“Your Highness, what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Greg,” Cain says, and I look at Beta whose wide eyes are glued to his phone, like it’s a spider and he’s a little girl. “Can I bring my Beta to your cousin’s wedding?”

Lucifer has a poker face now, of course, so I try to focus on his heartbeat; but there are too many people partying around us and I fail miserably. Shit. There’s no TV here, let me have at least this!

“Um, if he doesn’t mind seeing me with a hot date, then sure, you can bring him, your Highness,” I hear my brother’s response, and I can imagine him trying not to smile wide while saying this.

Of course he has a hot date, and he’s not shy about it! Oh, I miss that little jackass.

“He doesn’t mind,” Cain looks at his now-furious Beta while saying that.

“Great. Oh, do you want to meet up after the ceremony, Your Highness?”

Cain nods and puts the phone down, so I wail in complaint.

“Why didn’t you give me a chance to talk to my brother?” I push my plate away and stand up, because maybe I can tolerate any physical or mental discomfort, but I won’t tolerate this kind of bullshit. “Alpha,” I add with a spat and leave the table.

I get thatI don’t have internet privileges here, they don’t trust me yet—I wouldn’t trust me either. But for fuck’s sake, he could let me say supervised fucking ‘hi’ to my own brother! I march to the entrance.

I’m almost within reach of the open doors, when I hear a swish sound and feel the movement of cold air on my cheek.

Chapter 40 – Not The Most Mentally Stable

Istare blankly at the hunting knife stuck in the wooden frame, in front of my face.

Cain threw one of his knives at me!

I don’t think twice. Heck, I don’t think at all! I just use my inhuman speed to take the last step to the wooden doors, and grab the knife's handle to draw it from the frame. I turn swiftly, at the same time throwing the knife straight into Cain’s chest.

He catches it at the last moment, the blade already penetrating his black shirt and probably at least the skin. He throws it back at me with a roar, and I dodge it at the last millisecond.

“Don’t you fucking dare walk out on me like that!” he stands up.

The silence that falls after that in the courtyard is almost deafening.

I have no idea how he could sound so angry, but still be in so much control of emotions on his seemingly unbothered face.

“If you’ll excuse me, My Lord,” I bow down slowly in a mocking manner, feeling like I went back in time to the starting point of our relationship.

I turn on my heel and stride out.

“Ugh, Gamma, go after her, my father’s around,” I hear Cain saying, and no sooner after that, Atlas is on my tail asking me to slow down.

Slow down? He’s a fucking werewolf, he can catch up!

“Luna, wait for me!” Claudia shouts as I leave the castle with Cain’s Gamma, following me like a dog.

If he knew Ijust called him a dog… It’s the biggest insult for a werewolf. You can try calling us kittens, but neverdogs.

I stop abruptly. Atlas bumps into me and I lose balance, but he catches me in his arms. “Nowyou know how to wait for someone?”

I guess he’s still sour after I didn’t slow down for him when Cain asked him to follow me. I get out of his grip, returning an irritated look.

“Where are we going?” Claudia catches up with us with a smile, but I’m still too angry at Cain to smile back at my friend.

He almost fucking killed me… we are marked for fuck’s sake! Even if he doesn’t know about the true mate bond and its lethal consequences, it’s still unacceptable.
