"I couldn't risk it." My voice breaks. "I know I should have trusted you, but they will always come first.”
He nods in agreement. "No one will touch them." The intensity in his voice steals my breath. "Or you. I love you, Loxley. I've loved you since that first day you stood your ground against me, refusing to back down." His lips quirk. "Even covered in mud from the river, you were the fiercest thing I'd ever seen."
Before I can respond, he closes the distance between us. His lips capture mine with a gentleness that makes my heart ache. The kiss deepens, carrying years of longing, of unspoken words. His wings cocoon us completely as one hand slides to my lower back, drawing me closer.
I melt into him, my fingers tangling in his navy-blue hair. He tastes like storm winds and ancient magic, familiar and thrilling all at once. When we break apart, his copper-red eyes burn with an intensity that sends heat coursing through my veins.
"I will never let harm come to any of you." His forehead rests against mine, his curved horns framing my face. "You're my family. My heart. My home."

MAZAN
Seeing Lamain take the boys away, giving me a nod as he does, I sweep Loxley into my arms, my wings folding around us as I carry her through the winding paths between the treetop homes. Her fingers trace the glowing gold lines along my chest, and I tighten my hold, savoring her warmth against me.
"I can walk," she murmurs, but her head rests against my shoulder.
"I know." I press my lips to her forehead, breathing in the sweet jungle flower scent of her hair. "Let me have this moment." It’s been so long without her in my arms, I don’t want to give it up.
The wooden steps to her treehouse creak under my weight. Inside, the dying sunlight streams through the windows, casting silver shadows across her face. Those golden-brown eyes that first captured me shine with an emotion I've waited years to see.
I set her down gently, cupping her face in my hands. "I love you, Loxley." The words feel ancient and new all at once. "I've loved you since that first day by the waterfall."
Her fingers trail up my arms, leaving trails of fire in their wake. She rises on her tiptoes, pressing closer. "Show me."
I capture her lips with mine, pouring years of longing into the kiss. She matches my intensity, her hands sliding into my hair, carefully avoiding my horns. I trace the curve of her spine, memorizing every inch.
She tugs at the ties of my shirt, and I help her remove it. Her hands explore the planes of my chest, following the golden lines that pulse brighter at her touch. I untie the laces of her dress with careful precision, giving her time to stop me. But she presses closer, helping me slide the fabric from her shoulders.
"You're trembling," I whisper against her lips.
"Good trembling." She pulls back just enough to meet my gaze. "I love you, Mazan”
It’s like we can’t say the words enough. We have years to make up for after all.
I kiss her again, slower this time, savoring each moment. My wings curl around us, creating our own private world as we shed the last barriers between us.
She pushes me onto the bed, her golden-brown eyes locked on mine. Her hands smooth over my chest again, and the golden lines beneath her touch glow brighter with each passing second. My wings fall to either side, giving her the space to climb over me, her auburn braids falling loose around her face. Her legs straddle my hips and I’m breathless from the way she looks right now.
“I never want to be without you again,” she whispers, her fingers trailing down over my stomach. “Not ever.”
The words are raw, carrying a weight I can’t ignore. I reach up to touch her face, gently tracing the sharp curve of her cheekbone. “You’ve got me, Lox. I’m not going anywhere.” Her expression softens, something unspoken passing between us as she lowers herself onto me, sinking down until I’m buried deep inside her.
I groan, my hands gripping her hips as she begins to move. Her body glides against mine, every motion deliberate, every breath shaky but controlled. Her golden-brown eyes never leave mine, and I swear I can see her soul in them. She’s so strong, so fearless, and yet so fragile all at once. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful.
“Mazan…,” she breathes, her movements growing faster, sharper. Her hands press flat against my chest for balance, her fingers digging into my skin. I let her take control, letting her set the rhythm, letting her take exactly what she needs from me.
Her breath hitches and her hips rock harder, her body tightening around me. I can feel it, the moment she’s close, the way her muscles tense and her movements become erratic. She gasps, her eyes fluttering shut as her head tilts back, and I watch her fall apart.
Her climax ripples through her, every muscle in her body contracting as she cries out, her nails scraping against my chest. I hold her steady, letting her ride out the waves of pleasure, her body trembling as she leans down onto me, pressing her forehead to mine. Her breath comes in short, sharp bursts, and I can feel her heart racing against mine.
I flip her over, my hands gentle but firm as I guide her onto her back. Her golden-brown eyes widen with surprise, but there’s no hesitation in them, only trust. That look, it’s everything. Her auburn hair fans out around her, the light catching the rich tones, and I brush a loose strand from her face.
“Mazan…” Her voice is soft, filled with a need that mirrors my own.
“I’ve got you,” I murmur, my hands sliding down her sides, tracing the curve of her waist, the dip of her hips. She shivers beneath my touch, her body arching into me. Every movement she makes, every breath she takes, I feel it in my soul.
I take my time, moving inside her slowly, deeply, savoring the way her body responds to mine. Her legs wrap around me, pulling me closer, and I groan softly, the sensation of her surrounding me almost too much to bear. But I hold back, refusing to rush this, refusing to let this moment slip away too quickly.
