It takes the wind out of our guys, and balls are starting to get dropped.
At the two-minute warning of the fourth quarter, the teams are tied.
The crowd comes alive, screaming as our defense breaks through, the visiting quarterback sacked at the fifty-yard line. The ball flies out of his hand, picked up by Emmett. He shoves past the other team’s center before their tight end grabs his legs, sending him down.
The guy is like a bulldozer.
With only about a minute and thirty seconds left, I know they can do it.
“So they just need to get a touchdown here to win it, right?” Heidi says, her eyes round as saucers as she watches the field.
“Yeah, but they’re probably going to run the clock down just a little. If they score right now, a minute twenty seconds or so is plenty of time for the other team to do something wild and tie it again.”
She nods, bringing her thumb to her mouth and biting her nail as she leans forward, worried.
The guys take as long as they can, and when the clock flashes under a minute, Owen runs forward before turning to his left, catching a pass from Leo perfectly. He barely manages to dodge one of their safeties, but when he does, there’s nothing but field in front of him.
With twenty seconds to spare, Owen jumps into the end zone, winning us a game.
“Does the other team really think they can do something in twenty seconds?” Heidi asks.
“Probably not, but it’s worth a shot.”
Her head tilts, the pom-pom of her hat shifting to the other side of her head. We watch as the other team snaps the ball, but they can’t get a completion.
The clock quickly runs down, and we officially win the game.
Smiling, I hug my friends as we cheer, watching the guys high-five each other and the coaches.
The stadium fills with smoke as fireworks shoot up above and people start filing out.
“So we’re still going out tonight, right?”
“Of course. When do we ever miss Halloween night.”
“Never,” Amara shakes her head.
“You guys are coming back to mine to get ready?”
“Always,” Mila smiles.

“I can’t believe you got your nipples pierced and you didn’t tell us,” Mila deadpans as she looks at me.
“Are they that noticeable?”
“You’re in a skintight outfit of course they’re visible.”
“I put pasties on!”
“Well they’re not working great,” she responds.
“I think you look fine. It’s hot,” Amara assures me, slapping my back. She looks back into the mirror, putting her mouse ears on.
“Heidi what are you being, anyways?” I look her up and down. She wears pink stockings, the tiniest green shorts known to man, and a pink bodysuit.
She turns, her mascara wand in her hand as she shows off. “I’m Patrick Star, duh.”
