Will jammed his hands in his pockets. “Can you get around outside? Drive a car? Go back to work?”

“Not yet, but my family can take me places. I’m a long way from thinking about the future.”

“Call your mother and sisters to tell them they can see you.” Will laughed. “They’ll probably rush right over.” He regarded Diego. “I have news, too. Even though I have more furlough, I have to get back to work. I got a call that I’m needed in DC.”

“You stayed longer than I thought you would, buddy.”

A small smile. “I wanted to tell you in person.”

Katie straightened. “I’m leaving.”

“Could you wait for me, Detective? I want a word.”

“Yeah, I’ll be in my car.”

When she left, Will said, “Is Caleb helping you?”

“I don’t know. I still have dreams, but no daytime flashbacks.”

“Keep seeing him.”

“I will. Now go. You got a plane to catch.” Diego stood. “I’d hug you but that’s out of the question with my injury.” Diego held out his hand. “Thanks, buddy. You made this a lot easier.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll call you in a few days. See how you are.”

Will slid into Katie Donovan’s car. It smelled good. Female. She turned in her driver’s seat. “What do you want?”

“Why are you so irritated with me all the time?”

“Because you’re irritating. What do you want?”

“You sure you’re making the right decision here?”

“If you got a better idea…”

“No. If nothing’s happening, I agree that you can’t keep your people on. I’m still worried about Diego. Maybe I should find private security for him.”

“I doubt he’ll accept that. He seems really done with all this. But I’m worried, too. I’m having black and whites drive by every day and some detectives sit out front occasionally.”

“To give the pretense of coverage.”

She shrugged. “It’s the best I can do.”

“You’ve done a good job, Katie.”

“Wow, high praise from you.”

“I mean it.”

“Okay, thanks.”

“I enjoyed seeing you.”

She rolled her eyes.

His eyes narrowed on her and he gave in to temptation. He leaned over and kissed her. She tried to pull away…at first. Then she fell into the kiss. Her mouth was hot on his, demanding, probing. He met her demands, made his own. When it got too hot, he forced himself to pull back. “You pack quite a punch, Donovan.”
