Danny took out his phone, right there on the ice, and called Marty back. It was hard to hear over all of the screaming.
“Danny, what the fuck are you doing, bud?” Marty yelled. “You have a Stanley Cup to hoist!”
“I’ll get to that in a minute,” Danny said, impatient. “But I want you to know I’ll do it. I’ll take the job. And I’ll go to rehab.”
“Buddy, you donotknow how happy you’ve made me.”
“I dunno, man, I’m feeling pretty fuckin’ hopeful myself. Okay, I gotta go, the Cup—it’s my turn.”
“Go get ’em, kid.”
And so Danny walked out onto the ice, and with Gears’ and Gray’s help, lifted the Cup over his head, and it was a pretty fucking great feeling. But even better was knowing that Mike was in the crowd, watching, and would be there when he went home.
Danny couldn’t wait to tell him everything.
