He laughs, but it’s devoid of humor. It’s a lost laugh, “For what, Sky? She had permission to access my account.” He groans.
I don’t let this deter me. “It’s okay, we did it once. We’ll do it again.”
He deflates, “Skyler, there’s one thing we don’t have now.”
“What’s that?” My bones tremble, visions of the Keeper lurking in the shadows drip through my mind.
He pauses, inhaling a sharp pull of air. “Time.”
Epilogue
Aviolent gasp forces me to inhale salty air, it nearly chokes me.
It feels like poison lacing my throat.
Normally, the ocean brings me comfort, but now as I look around with a new set of eyes, I hear the waves whispering to us. Laughing.
“The keeper is coming for me, for us.” Foster whispers.
For the first time since I’ve met him, he is scared. I look to the darkness, wondering if we’re already being watched. “Then we’re running.”
We stand in silence for a moment before Foster shakes his head. “No.” He decides. His emotions are rolling from shock to pure dangerous rage. “Thank God Sophie is taken care of; this isn’t about her now.”
I tilt my head, trying to control the tremble in my tone. “What’s it about?”
“Revenge.” Foster sneers, looking at me. “We’re not going anywhere, if he wants a fight that’s what he’ll get.”
“I’m scared.” I admit.
He throws his inked arm around my body, letting me know it’s us together this time. We’ll weather this last storm by each other’s side. “I’ll burn this fucking city to the ground to protect you.”
I try to breathe in some of his confidence, but when the moon shines our way and illuminates his features, his eyes tell me everything I need to know.
We’re fucked.
The water touches my feet and I step back, noticing how the waves look much more sinister, they are crashing.
Just like our lives.
Our time is up, and even the tide knows it.
