Standing naked.

GETTING READY TO GO FOR A SWIM.Do I? Should I? Why not?DID YOU WANT TO JOIN ME?

I wasn’t sure if I wanted him to accept or not.

I WISH I COULD. I HAVE MEETINGS TODAY. BUT I’M FREE TOMORROW. WE CAN TALK ABOUT IT TONIGHT. HAVE A GREAT DAY.

Well now I knew if I couldn’t get him to read it tonight, then maybe I could, tomorrow.

YOU TOO.

Still standing there naked, I looked at myself in the mirror. My bathing suit didn’t leave much to one's imagination. And seeing him in his swimsuit was going to do the same for me.

I really should’ve invited him to lunch or something that required...clothes.

He said he had meetings today, otherwise, I would send him one more text suggesting we do something else. Anything else. But doing so was only going to draw attention to the fact that I was second-guessing my decision. I’d rather find another way to make it less awkward tomorrow.

Might even have to invite Kathy along. With her constant chatter, we might not ever make it to the beach.

I loved the water and if I were really on vacation, I would spend the entire time on the beach, but somehow, it had lost its appeal. Maybe it was the heavy weight of the real reason why I was here that ruined it. Or maybe it was the guilt that was starting to eat away at me. Everyone had been so nice to me, and what had I been?

I am fraud. A liar. And tonight, will just be more of the same.

CHAPTER 6

Mayson

There really had been no point in lying to Crystal. Granted, I was working, but nothing that I couldn’t have blown off to spend the day with her at the beach. It was the location that bothered me.

I couldn’t believe it. It was rare that I turned down an offer. I’d dated more women than I could count. Most of the time we just went to dinner and exchanged a few kisses before I dropped them back home. Even though that wasn’t the reputation I had, I didn’t care. Maybe people thought I was a ladies’ man. It didn’t bother me. Orion wasn’t thrilled with my reputation. Yet that never stopped me either.

So why did I decline her offer? Even now, as we made our way to Orion’s house, there was an awkward silence between us. This was not the way I intended the night to go. And if I didn’t fix it fast, Raya was going to hop all over it and I’d never hear the end of it.

“How was the beach?” I asked.

“I didn’t end up going,” she replied.

I shot her a quick glance and asked, “Why not?”Please don’t say because I wasn’t there.

“I felt horrible yesterday being so tired that I had to go back to my room and rest. I didn’t want to risk the same thing happening tonight,” she replied.

That was a good excuse. Not sure I believed it, but it was at least believable.

“I’m sure they would understand if you couldn’t make it,” I said.

She shrugged. “I know, but I want to be there. Raya and I spoke briefly this morning, and she really sounds like a wonderful person. And Kathy had me in stitches on the flight here. Why would I want to spend my night alone in my room when I could be surrounded by such...joy?” I didn’t say a word and she asked, “Unless you didn’t want me here. Because if that’s the case, you can turn your car around and drop me back off at the resort.”

Cocking a brow, I asked, “Why would you think that?”Even though it’s partially true.

“I’m a nurse. I’m used to reading people.”

I laughed. “Isn’t that a detective, not a nurse?”

“You would think so. But as a nurse, I need to be able to read whether you’re telling me the truth when I ask if something hurts, or how you're feeling. You’d be surprised how many people lie about such things, even when they come to the doctor's office willingly,” she explained.

“First of all, I’m not a patient. And secondly, I’m glad you’re here. It means I will have time to sit with my brother and catch up instead of being dragged into the conversation with the ladies,” I stated.

“I have a feeling that you can’t be dragged into anything you don’t want to,” she replied.
