But Sheila doesn’t get out of the pool.

Guess I need another.

“Alexei? What the hell, man?” Jax turns and yells at me.

I walk over, spreading my legs apart with each step. “I’m trying to scare Sheila out.”

Jax starts laughing. “It isn’t working.” He points at the lazy circles the flamingo is doing. “Still sore? I told you not to do that shit.”

Nodding, I cup my crotch. “I think by next week it shouldn’t sting anymore.”

Nikolai grunts. “What the hell did you do?”

Good, Lara is watching me and not him.

With a wide grin, I start to drop my zipper. “I’ll show you.”

“No!” They all join voices in trying to stop me.

I roll my eyes. “I saw Jax get his, but I wanted to get one, too. I just don’t have any kids, so the stones didn’t make sense.”

“So you pierced your dick? I still think you’re a dumbass.” Jax snickers over his beer before tossing the empty bottle into the garbage can.

Lara pokes Nikolai in the chest. “I’m not done. Why wasn’t I invited? Am I not a close enough family member?” A droplet runs down her cheek. “Am I not good enough?” Her lower lip trembles.

Fuck. This isn’t working. She’s supposed to behappy.

Nikolai kisses the top of her head. “Don’t be silly. I love you. We didn’t want a big fuss. You know me.”

A horn blows, signaling a line of servers to appear with an oversized cake and tubs of ice cream.

“Time for the birthday boy to blow out his candles!” The green haired clown calls out while carrying the cake to the table.

Now is my chance to get her away. “Come on, Lara. Let’s get a snack. It always makes me feel better.”

She pauses, wiping her eyes. “No,” she says, shaking her head. “I can’t. I just, well, I need some air.” Turning, she pulls away from my grasp and heads towards the woods

Shit. “I’m going to get her a slice.”

I care about Lara more than Sheila. If my flamingo wants to swim, fine.

But I need to make sure Lara is okay.

“What’s up with you and Lara?” Jax follows me over to the plates.

“We’re friends.” I shrug, picking up two slices.

I don’t look at him, I keep my eyes fixated on Lara as she walks away. I hate the way her cheeks are reddening. Her jaw is tense and she’s tapping her fingers on her palm.

She’s upset.

Jax watches me, then gestures at her moving towards the trees. “You don’t look at her like you’re just friends.”

“Fine. We’re best friends. Just don’t tell Niki, he will get all jealous, okay?” For a split second, I drag my focus to Jax and find him smirking behind his bottle of beer.

“What?” I ask in frustration.

He chuckles and shakes his head. “You’ll figure it out one day, Alexei.”
