“Are you sure it’s safe to eat?” She kept her voice below the hum of the crowd.

He smiled as if she’d said something amusing and brushed his lips over hers. “We’ll draw attention if we don’t eat. Remy and Lily have our backs.” After another kiss, he eased away. Trace chewed a bite of his enchilada and moaned in appreciation. “This is great.” He nodded toward her plate. “Try yours.”

After chewing and swallowing a sample, she sighed. “You’re right. This is amazing.”

By the time Trace finished his meal, Bridget had consumed half of hers. She couldn’t eat much with her stomach in a knot. “Do you like Italian food?” she asked on the sidewalk as they walked to the hotel with Remy and Lily trailing behind them.

“Love it. Why?”

“Date ideas for when we return home.”

Trace wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “Are you planning to ask me out on a date?”

“Thinking about it.”

“I’m in favor of the idea.”

“I can’t be the only woman to ask you out.”

“No, but you’ll be the only woman I said yes to.”

“I’ll count myself lucky.”

“No, sweetheart. I’m the lucky one.” Trace scanned the area as they walked. He pulled her tighter to his side. “We have company. I think Hugo’s people are going to intercept us. No matter what happens, I’ll handle them.” He kissed her temple. “This is another step toward our goal.”

Right. He made this sound simple and commonplace while she felt like ducking and running for cover.

As they approached the final cross street between them and their hotel, a black car zoomed in front of them and blocked the street. Two bruisers exited the vehicle, one from the front passenger seat, the other from the backseat. Both wore black t-shirts, pants, and boots similar to Trace’s. They also wore holsters with handguns at their waists.

“Accessories of the well-dressed thug.” she murmured.

Trace chuckled. “Looks like it. And before you ask, I’m carrying multiple weapons.”

“At least you don’t flaunt your hardware.”

The men stepped onto the sidewalk, eyes filled with suspicion. The taller of the two moved into their path.

Trace nudged Bridget behind him. “What do you want?” he asked the thug.

“Come with us.”

“No.”

The second thug moved to his buddy’s side. Why didn’t Trace go with them? He wanted an audience with Hugo.

“The boss sent us to take you to him.”

“My woman is tired. She needs rest before we speak to your employer.”

The first thug waved Trace’s protest aside. “She’s not invited.”

“Then I’ll pass on your employer’s job offer.” Trace reached back and clasped Bridget’s hand. He placed himself between her and the closest thug as he steered her around Hugo’s men and vehicle.

They neared the hotel’s front entrance when one of the men called out, “Wait.”

Trace turned, keeping his body between Bridget and the men.

“Both of you come with us now or you won’t leave Ciudad de Oro alive.”
