“You agree with his assessment, Bridget?” Brent asked.

“That makes the most sense,” she agreed. “Pedro’s lieutenants have disappeared. I’m not sure if they’re on the run or if Hugo’s people got to them and helped them disappear.”

The jet jerked as the wheels hit the runway at John C. Tune Airport.

Brent studied Bridget a moment. “How long did it take you to come up with this information?”

“Two hours. I would have found more, but the headache slowed me down.”

He shifted his gaze to Trace. “Your computer?”

“Yes, sir.”

“He watched everything I did,” Bridget added.

“Did you find the rumors that Hugo was in Freeport?”

She nodded. “I don’t believe them.”

“Why not?” Ben asked.

“It doesn’t make sense. Why keep Ruth out of circulation in our hometown? If he’s holding my sister against her will, she could escape and accuse him of kidnapping or something. Wouldn’t he be better off taking her to his territory rather than staying in hers where he isn’t as comfortable or in control of the situation?”

Smart lady. Trace wrapped his hand around hers. So far, she was passing this job interview with flying colors.

The jet taxied to a stop.

“What was your biggest frustration during the search?”

“The limited databases I was allowed to use and that I couldn’t keep digging because of a stupid headache.”

Her scowl made Trace’s lips twitch. Yep, she sounded like Zane.

Brent chuckled. “If your background checks out, Bridget Monihan, you’re hired. I can use people exactly like you.”

She looked surprised and glanced at Trace. “Is he serious?”

“You won’t be going back to work at the high school in Freeport.”

She beamed at him and turned that full-powered smile on Brent. “Thank you, sir.”

He inclined his head and shifted his attention to Nico. “Need help at Bridget’s place?”

“Not yet. We’ll recon the area before we form a plan. If we need backup, I’ll contact you.”

“Good enough. Unless I hear otherwise, I’m going home to my wife and daughter.” He stood, grabbed his black bag, and strode toward the exit.

By silent consent, the rest of Trace’s teammates rose and did the same.

“Got your gear,” Ben said to him. “I’ll wait by your SUV.” And he left.

Trace got to his feet and helped Bridget stand. “Time to find out if Ruth is in Freeport or if this is a trail to nowhere.”

“And if it is a bad lead?”

He hefted her bag from the overhead bin. “We’ll keep hunting until we find her.” Shadow would never leave Bridget’s sister in Hugo’s hands. But time wasn’t on their side. The longer Hugo had her, the greater chance Ruth would try to escape or she would displease him in some way. Either scenario could end her life.
