Without taking his attention from Delilah, the detective said, “Don’t interfere, Rainer, or I’ll have to ask you to wait in the hall.”

“Not happening.”

Delilah squeezed his hand. “It’s okay. A few men have asked. When I turned them down, I was careful. None seemed to have hard feelings.”

“Have any been persistent in trying to change your mind?”

Beside her, Matt stiffened.

“Two. I told them last week I was interested in someone else.”

“How did they take the news?”

“Disappointed.” Her eyelids grew so heavy, Delilah gave up the fight to keep them open.

“One more question, Delilah, then I’ll leave you to rest. What did you do after the man who attacked you left?”

“Called Matt for help.” Her words came out slurred.

“I stayed on the phone with her,” Matt said. “We need to let her rest. The nurse gave her pain meds a few minutes ago. Delilah won’t be able to answer more questions.”

“I have questions for you as well.”

“No problem. Let’s go to the hallway.” She felt Matt’s warm breath on her ear as he spoke softly to her. “Delilah, I’m sending Trent in to stay with you. If you need me, send him to get me.”

She sighed. “Okay.”

The darkness closed in.

CHAPTER FOUR

Once Trent was inside the room with Delilah, Matt folded his arms over his chest and eyed the Otter Creek detective staring at him. “Ask your questions, Rod. I don’t want to be away from her for long.”

Rod’s lips curved. “Does she know how you feel about her?”

“No, and you’re not going to tell her.” He’d take care of that himself soon and pray she didn’t turn him down.

“Better not wait too long, man. The single men in Otter Creek are circling the lady like sharks.”

Matt scowled. He’d figured that out while listening to her answer questions. If he waited much longer for her to become comfortable with him, another man might slip in and capture her interest. “What do you want to know?”

“Tell me what happened from the time Delilah contacted you. What did she say?”

Knowing the detective needed every detail he could get, Matt related his conversation with Delilah verbatim.

“She didn’t mention a second intruder in the house?”

Matt’s jaw tightened. “No. You found evidence of a second person?”

“That’s what it looks like to me.”

He couldn’t imagine any person disliking Delilah enough to hurt her. She was the sweetest woman he’d ever known. “How did they get in?”

“Broke a window in her bedroom. She doesn’t have an active alarm system.” He glared at Matt.

“I’ve been encouraging her to let me arrange an installation with Fortress. Delilah Frost is one stubborn lady. She’s been saving up for the alarm system.”

“If she were mine, I would take the decision out of her hands after this attack.”
