Startled, Oliver Shannon glanced up from a document he’d been reading. He scowled at Delilah and Matt. “Did we have an appointment?”

“No, but you’ll want to hear what we have to say.” Matt laid his hand against Delilah’s lower back and urged her inside the office.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Shannon. I told them you were busy today, but they barged in anyway.” Ms. Walters shot them an angry glare. “Should I call security and have them escorted out?”

Matt snorted. As if a rent-a-cop stood a chance at making him leave if he didn’t want to go.

“It’s all right, Lisa. They won’t be here long. Will you, Mr. Rainer?”

“That’s up to you.”

The assistant hovered in the doorway. “Would you like more coffee, Mr. Shannon?”

He smiled. “Thank you.”

She left without offering refreshment to Delilah and Matt, leaving the door open. Yeah, Matt’s feelings were hurt over that. Not. The angry glare she’d sent his way would have made him uneasy about accepting any type of refreshment from her hand.

Shannon waved them to the chairs in front of his desk. “What was so urgent you couldn’t make an appointment with my assistant?”

“Randy Holloway is dead, shot to death two hours ago.”

Blood drained from the older man’s face. “He was murdered?”

“That’s right. I guess you don’t know anything about that.”

“Of course not. Why would I?”

“You have a good reason to reduce the number of people looking into Michelle Holloway’s dealings with your office.”

“I had nothing to do with Holloway’s death. I haven’t left this office since I arrived at 9:00 this morning.”

Lisa Walters returned with a steaming mug of coffee in her hands. She, too, looked pale. Interesting considering she’d been flushed and out of breath minutes ago. Perhaps the accusations against her boss upset her.

“What did you mean about reducing the number of people looking into Mrs. Holloway’s business with my office?”

“At least one person in your firm has been skimming money from Michelle’s accounts almost from the day she put you in charge of them.”

“That’s outrageous. Are you accusing me of embezzling funds, Mr. Rainer?”

“Someone is guilty as sin. I don’t know if it’s you or someone else. I won’t quit digging until I know who’s responsible for the theft.”

“You have proof?”

“The forensic accountant I asked to check Michelle’s accounts found evidence to back up her findings.”

“I see. What will you do now?”

“The authorities have been notified. I want the name of every person authorized to handle those accounts.”

“It’s a limited list.”

“All the better. I want the list now. I’m sure you understand the urgency of the matter.”

“Of course,” Shannon said, his words stilted. He turned away to his computer.

Shannon’s assistant returned. She had pasted a smile on her trembling mouth. “There’s a phone call for Ms. Frost.”

Matt frowned. “Who is it?”
