Becca sits in the front of the room, far enough that she can’t hear our conversation.

“Huh?” Ralph’s expression was baffled.

I repeated myself before adding, “Becca told Noa I used to make fun of her. And since I lost my memory, I couldn’t really deny it.”

“You didn’t know Noa. She wasn’t even on our radar,” he told me with a shrug. “Becca’s just being a bitch. And you know Ineveruse that word when it comes to women.”

I laughed then, loud enough for people to glance in our direction.

When the teacher looked back at us, I smoothed my features and took out my notebook. The lesson went by quickly, and when the bell rang, it surprised me.

“Meet you at your car, yeah?” Ralph said as I gathered my books.

I nodded and headed for my locker, ignoring any and all things Becca. I opened my locker and grabbed my jacket, shoved my books inside, then slammed the door shut. I turned and bumped into Mouse. “I’m so sorry, Mou—Rachel,” I said, helping her with her books.

“It’s okay. It was my fault.” She chewed her lip over, her face pinking under my gaze. “And…I’m sorry about…kind of asking you out.” She was losing steam, her words coming slower now.

“No worries.” I offered a smile. “We good?”

She held out her hand and I shook it.

“Take care, Rach.” I pulled on my coat and headed out onto the crisp white lawn. Rock salt crunched under my boots as I crossed the parking lot, and I unlocked my car, waiting for Ralph to show up. I had to drop him off and get ready for my date with Noa.

I saw both of them walking toward me—Ralph talking loudly, gesturing with his hands. The ends of their conversation reached me just before they did.

“Yeah, he’s a good guy,” I heard Ralph tell Noa. When he stopped in front of me, my gaze bounced back and forth between them.

“I was told you guys have a date. Drop me on the way?” Ralph asked.

I didn’t want to deny him our usual ritual but I looked at Noa, waiting to see what she thought.

“Be warned, I play DJ in his car,” she aimed at Ralph before staring at me.

He rolled his eyes before climbing in the backseat.

Before she could get in, I grabbed her hand and pulled her toward me. Fuck, I wanted to press my smile to hers and taste her happiness.

“I can’t even think when you’re this close to me,” she whispered, her lids dropping slightly.

“We’d better go,” I said. I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do than breathe her air and soak up her attention.

“Then let’s go, Dexter.” She pulled away, yanking the passenger door open. Before she shut it, her eyes found mine and she smiled.

It was a full-on smile, so bright and so like the one I’d witnessed in the hall. She closed the passenger door and started messing with her phone, and I ran my hands over my face.

I was set on winning all right.

Noa tookcommand of the music and before long Ralph was singing along with what lyrics he knew, making the rest up.

“So, tell me about yourself, Noa.” Ralph sat in the backseat, hanging his arm close to Noa’s shoulder.

She looked like she didn’t know what to say, so I suggested he ask specific questions.

“Any sisters?” he asked easily, but I watched her spine stiffen.

“No. One brother—Tim.” She didn’t offer more information.
