Page 33 of When We Crash

You should want what I’m offering you.

I wanted to grab her. I needed to physically touch her to show her that this was unavoidable. We were going to happen.

If she couldn’t believe my sincerity, she had to believe the way it felt when we touched. It couldn’t be denied.

She tugged on her coat, then shook her head and took more steps away, putting more space between us, making it harder for me to convince her.

“I can’t just let you walk away. You can either come back here willingly or I’m going to grab you. You want to go home? Fine, I’ll bring you home,” I said.

“I can take the bus. It got me here.” She tried to wave me away as she kept walking. But now she was going to learn that if she walked away, I would follow.

I jogged after her for the second time today and when I reached her, I hauled her over my shoulder. She wriggled, causing me to stop and curse, my knee aching.

“Stay still or you’ll fuck up my knee.” I stood still for a moment then headed to my car.

“I shouldn’t have to worry about your knee, Dexter,” she snapped, but didn’t move anymore.

I unlocked my car and buckled her into the passenger seat. She pouted and I wanted to tell her how cute she looked, but I figured she would stab me with the closest sharp object. And I was still trying not to be pissed that she was acting like I did something wrong.

When I got in and turned the engine over, I said, “I don’t know what the problem is. I don’t know if you’re trying to push me away, but I’m not going anywhere. You can act batshit crazy and you can push my buttons, but me walking away isn’t happening.” I gulped. “Not when I see that you’re needing someone just as badly as I am.”

Her arms reached for me and in a moment, her hands were on my cheeks and her face was nearing mine. She stopped when we were less than an inch apart, her eyes on my lips, and my eyes on her eyes. They were hazy, unfocused. All at once they sharpened. She lost her confidence and pulled away. I sighed, missing the feel of her on me.

She felt it; she had to have felt it. It was dangerous when we touched because it was so fucking right. Excuses lost their validity, denial lost its power—all when her skin came in contact with mine.

“You can’t expect me not to be curious. Not when I want to know everything about you,” I tried to reason.

She nodded and I placed my hands on the wheel, trying to gather myself.

Did she almost destroy me?

Or did I almost kiss her?

Almost—the worst word.

And then, the moment was gone.

“Where did you want to go?” I asked, breaking the silence.

She sniffled. “I feel a little insane.”

At least I wasn’t alone in that. “Yeah.” I pulled off the elastic that held my hair together and ran my fingers through the strands. “Want to talk about it?”

“Actually, I’d like to do anythingbutthat. You have something in mind?”

I pulled my hair back into a bun and stared out the windshield. I was still contemplating options when my cell phone rang. “What’s up, Ralph?” I answered, wondering what he was calling about.

“Party tonight. Perfect chance for you to stop obsessing over that chick,” he said.

I looked over at Noa, whose mouth curved slightly. Slightly embarrassed, I lowered the volume. “I’mwithsaid chick, jackass. Whose party?”

“Doesn’t matter. I’ll text you the address. Meet you there later. Is ten good?” He answered in that round way of his that made it sound like he was smiling like an idiot.

“I’ll let you know,” I said, looking at Noa.

She looked out the window, seemingly uninterested in my conversation.

Ralph snorted. “If you aren’t there, I’ll kick your—”
