“What else did he tell you?” I questioned.

“He suggested I ask you out,” she answered, looking down at her feet.

“Fuck,” I whispered. The sound of the swear had her looking up at me, her eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry,” I tried to say, but she was already running off. I glared at Ralph as he walked toward me.

“Did I help? Is there a love connection there?” he asked, a stupid ass smile on his stupid ass face.

“You think it’s funny to pick on someone?” I fought the urge to throw my crutch and shove him.

“I wasn’t trying to—”

“I don’t know what kind of personyouwere before the accident but shit like this won’t happen again. Not if you want me in your life,” I warned before I turned and walked out toward my car.

November ended, and December came. I got rid of the crutches, walked on my own, and started to feel more and more comfortable in this life.

And while everyone was filled with holiday cheer, I was waking up, wondering. Wondering if I should just…live Dex’s life and hope destiny found me.

“What’s going on with you?” Tracey asked me over our morning cup of coffee. It was a personal tradition of hers that I’d begun to participate in.

“What do you mean?” I asked a question I could answer on my own. Why was I acting like a recluse? Why was every action tainted with disappointment? And most of all, the question she wouldn’t ask…why wasn’t I getting my memory back?

“Why do you walk around like the world is on your shoulders?” she asked, surprising me.

“I don’t know.” I was lying. But telling her anything would mean telling her everything. Instead, I set the cup down and left for school.

After my final class, I ambled through the halls.

Another day down.

Every day that passed was a lost opportunity. I was no closer to finding her, and the Angel of Death didn’t have anything to say about it.

Has he given up?

Realized his mistake?

I was deep in thought, looking down, when I bumped into someone. Textbooks hit the floor, and I bit back the urge to react angrily as I watched them scatter—pages opening, pens rolling. I looked up in defeat, and met the most soulful brown eyes I’d ever seen. Which happened to belong to the mostbeautifulgirl I’d ever seen.

She looked at me like she wanted to punch me for bumping into her, but all I could do was stare as she bent to pick her books up from the floor. Even as she bent down, I admired her thick lashes, the curve of the apple of her cheeks, and her full lips that were pressed together.

I should probably help her,I thought belatedly, squatting before her. She shot me a glare and snatched the notebook I’d grabbed from my hold.

Her hair was blue—light blue—the hair closer to her scalp giving way to dark brown roots. But it blended. And it was perfect.

She stood up with her books, and I noticed she wasn’t too much shorter than I was. She stood there, looking right at me, like she knew she was who I’d been searching for, waiting for me to have her.

Then she blinked and stepped aside. “Excuse me,” she said as she walked past me.

Even filled with irritation, her voice did something to me, kicking me in my head and creating a flameless fire within me.

I can’t let her leave.

Every part of me screamed to follow her.

So I did.

“Wait! Hey, wait up!” I called as I rushed toward her, not knowing what I’d even say.
