Thankfully that was the only vice I had to contend with. The vodka consumption dwindled considerably after the move to L.A. Maybe it was because he only had one kidney. Or maybe it was because he wasn’t drinking to forget what he did for a living. Either way, a glass or two here and there wasn’t going to kill him like the damn smoking. If those were the only two healthy changes he made, I was happy. Especially since he looked like he wanted to murder me when I suggested we start eating more vegetarian meals.

“Here’s something you can get,” Sasha said, slipping his phone out of his pocket. He swiped through the screens, typing something. When he found whatever it was, he handed it over.

It was a Russian word.

I cocked my head, like studying the Cyrillic from a different angle would help. I may have learned to speak it over the past few years but reading it was an entirely different story — and forget about even trying to write it. It all looked like loops and weird symbols that didn’t sound anything like their English counterpart (if there even was one).

Like a kindergartener, I sounded out the letters as I knew them, hoping it would come together in my brain. When it did, it hit me as hard as when I first saw that sun design.

“Solnyshko?” I asked, looking up at him.

He nodded, his teeth looking extra white against his tan skin when he smiled. God, he was beautiful. Even after all this time, seeing him smile — actually smile — was one of the best parts of my day.

“I don’t want you to ever forget who you are, what you can do,” he said quietly. “No matter what happens, the sun always rises.”

I stood and crossed the short distance to him, pressing my lips to his before I started crying like a schmuck.

Three years ago, I could have never predicted we’d end up where we were. Three years ago, I was nothing but a rich kid who’d been spoiled and sheltered from the brutality of the world. Three years ago, Sasha was nothing more than a ruthless criminal with no regard for anyone or anything. We shouldn’t have ever met, let alone fallen for one another under the worst circumstances.

Now? He wasmine, as much as I was his, until the sun stopped rising.

THE END
