“If you have to take that many guns to a meeting with your boss, maybe you need a new boss,” I remarked, leaning against the kitchen counter.

Tucking his ankle gun out of view, he straightened and met my gaze. Something akin to worry flickered across his face as he came closer. “On second thought, maybe you should come with me.”

I couldn’t help but grimace. “If he thinks I’m dead, it’s probably not a good idea to roll up in the car with you. And I’m not hiding in the backseat. I already feel like your dirty little secret.”

His mouth twisted into a frown, but he didn’t say anything. It would have been the perfect time to tell me a lie and assure me Iwasn’this dirty secret, that by claiming me as “his” I was more to him than a piece of ass. But, that would requirefeelings, which he refused to acknowledge as much as his sexuality, whatever the hell it was.

“I’ll be fine.” I clapped a hand on either side of his biceps and squeezed lightly, pepping myself up as much as him. “Go.”

“Donotleave.” My eyes had barely rolled when he grabbed my jaw and forced me to look at him again, his stare borderline hostile. “Do you understand?”

“Yes, I understand.” God, I felt like I was fifteen, being grounded all over again for scratching my dad’s stupid car.

He nodded and let go of my jaw to pull me in for a tight hug. Giving me a chaste kiss, he pushed away from me quickly and disappeared out the door.

Alone, I exhaled and looked around the empty apartment, trying to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do with myself now.

Viktor chosea popular tea room for our meeting, which was just as well. I knew the place and I knew I had at least three different exit routes if I needed them.

As expected, most of the crew was there, grouped around different tables. Viktor sat alone, in the center, eating a pastry and sipping his tea like a fucking king. By the look of things, they’d chased out anyone not connected to the organization, save for the wait staff.

I was about to walk in when my cell phone rang.

It was Lada.

Frowning, I took a step back, out of view of the front window and answered.

“I have something,” Lada said, almost breathless. The sound of her voice made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

“What is it?”

“Is it safe to talk?”

I took another step away from the door, turning my back on it in case someone came out. “Spit it out, woman!”

“Yuri.” I could hear the tremble in her voice, even through the phone. “He’s planning something. Something big.”

“How do you know?”

“He met up with Ivan, Kolya, and Gregor. I heard them say ‘wolf.’ It can only be you, Sasha. I didn’t hear what, exactly, but they loaded up with weapons and left.”

I checked my watch before throwing a cautious glance inside the restaurant. None of those four were in Viktor’s entourage. That couldn’t have been good.

Eduard caught sight of me through the window and frowned, a silent question on his face.

“When?” I asked, turning my back on him.

“Just now. I called you straight away.”

If they were coming to ambush me, I had at least twenty minutes for them to get here from the Birdcage. It would have to be a short meeting, then.

“Don’t tell anyone we spoke,” I said before hanging up.

Exhaling a steadying breath, I cracked my neck and walked into the tea room as if nothing had happened. Eduard’s gaze followed me the entire way, a dozen silent questions drifting through the air like smoke.
