Eduard muttered under his breath. When he pulled his hand out of his pocket, it was with a phone, not a weapon. Relaxing a bit, I tugged my shirt back down over the gun. We smoked in silence while the phone rang through the speaker.

“What the fuck do you want?” Yuri snapped.

Eduard looked at me and gestured with the phone, waiting for me to speak.

I pushed it back at him and shook my head, purposely inhaling as much smoke as I could so I didn’t have to talk.

“Well...” Eduard cleared his throat. “I was wondering what you knew about the bank box. I want all the facts before we hit it.”

“Why the fuck would I tell you anything?”

“Because if you don’t, your uncle won’t get the shit inside.”

“Why? Did that dog fuck up again?” Yuri laughed. “I heard about what happened, that little bitch getting away from him. Pathetic!”

My jaw clenched tighter with each word. I spiked the cigarette on the cement and ground it to dust beneath my heel, wishing it was Yuri’s fucking face.

“You don’t know what you’re fucking talking about,” Eduard snapped.

“Don’t I?” I could practically see Yuri’s sneering face.

“No, you don’t.” Eduard shot me a warning look. I clamped my mouth shut before I blew the whole reason for calling.

“So Sasha really tracked him down after he escaped? Howdidhe escape anyway?”

“What’s it matter to you?”

Yuri laughed. “It doesn’t. It’s just too bad we didn’t get to have fun with the little bitch first. Hell, who knows. Maybe Sasha did it anyway. Sick fuck couldn’t stay away from that pretty face. Do you think he shot him before, or after? During?”

Rage exploded inside me. I lunged at Eduard and his damn phone. “You goddamn lying motherfucker! The next time I see you, I’m going to rip your fucking face off!”

Eduard took a couple steps back, holding his hand up to try and ward me off.

Yuri’s twisted laugh echoed through the phone. “Oh, Sasha. I knew you were there! So predictable! Andsosensitive!”

“Name a time and place and I’ll show you how fucking sensitive I am, you piece of shit! You can’t hide behind your uncle forever. Even he’ll admit you crossed the goddamn line.”

“We’ll see about that.” Yuri hung up.

“I’m going to fucking kill him!” I shouted at the phone, ignoring the pair of gasping women as they bicycled past us. Unless they spoke Russian, I wasn’t the least bit concerned about what they heard.

“You can’t!” Eduard smacked my shoulder. “He’s protected.”

“I don’t care!”

“Just take a — fuck!” Eduard shoved me to the side, yanking his gun out from behind his back and taking aim at something behind me.

It was Roan, standing on the other side of the fountain, his eyes wide and his chest heaving, like he’d sprinted from the car.

“No!” I threw my arm out, knocking Eduard’s gun arm down. “Don’t!”

“It’s the fucking kid!” Eduard yelled back at me, his eyes as wide as Roan’s.

“I know.”

Eduard searched the surrounding area frantically. “What if there are cops?”

“There aren’t.” I ducked my head, ignoring his bewildered expression, and angled myself toward Roan, waving him over. Now the cat was out of the bag, it would be better to have an ally. Hopefully.
