“The hell it isn’t.” I made a face at him. A little alcohol might be the cure for my pounding headache.

“Then give me your oxy,” Leander said flatly.

“I left it at home.”

Leander’s hand dove into the inner pocket of my jacket, withdrawing the orange bottle with an irritated scowl.

Damn it.

Before he could actually scold me, Kai handed us each a glass and held his aloft. “Congratulations. Statistically you have a higher chance of staying married, so good job, fellas.”

We clinked our glasses and took the obligatory sip — not a shot, like you would with shittier tequilas.

“Damn it. The sangrita.” Kai snapped and rushed back to the kitchen.

Leander held his glass out to me. I happily took it and dumped it into mine, giving him the empty one back. It wasn’t oxy, but it was a good enough sort of compromise.

Kai strolled back to the living room and set the sangrita on the table next to me. “Oh good! It’s done.” He almost sloshed his drink as he jumped over our feet and slid onto the couch, tapping a few things on the keyboard.

Leander’s hand drifted down from his lap and found mine. Instead of giving me a concerned look, he had a death grip on my fingers.

I squeezed him back, hoping it conveyed my understanding and reassurance. Even though Kai looked like he leapt out of some anime book, with his shock of silver hair and chipped black nails, he really did know his shit. In all of my shady dealings, I’d never found a better hacker.

“You want me to email you this file?” Kai asked, clicking through a variety of screens as they popped up. “I mean, there’s not much here since it’s a burner, which you already knew. But I’ve got the list of incoming and outgoing calls. And some of these dodos used a real phone number, not a spoofing program.” He laughed and then sighed dramatically, muttering to himself about how stupid people were.

“Can you trace them?” Leander asked.

Kai grinned at him over the laptop. “I can get you their favorite color if you give me enough time.”

Leander’s hand relaxed in mine.

“What are you going to do when you find them?” Kai asked, typing away. “Please tell me it’s something naughty.”

“What do you think?” I shot him a pointed look.

He ignored it and kept working. “What ever happened to that doctor? I haven’t seen anything else pop up online from her, so she must have gotten the hint.”

Leander swiveled in my lap, narrowing his eyes. “Doctor? What doctor?”

Unfortunately, Kai and I answered at the same time.

“It’s nothing, my love,” I replied with a brilliant smile.

“Just some crazy psychiatrist,” Kai added helpfully.

I was going to strangle him with that fucking collar. Still, I did my best to mask my true feelings when I turned my face up toward Leander. “As I said, it’s nothing. It was for another case.”

Leander’s mouth pressed into a hard line. “You’re lying. What happened with Lorelei?”

“It’s really nothing,” Kai said on my behalf. “I just scrubbed a couple things from online. That’s all.”

Leander slid out of my lap, glaring between the two of us. “What things?”

Sighing, I got to my feet and reached for his hand. He jerked it away from me, purposely folding his arms across his chest.

“How can I put this?” I hoped it would buy me some time, but all it did was piss him off further.

“As quickly and truthfully as possible!”
