I rolled my head from side to side, cracking my neck. “Now, where were we?”

“Showing Nora the error of her ways,” Jake replied.

“Ah, that’s right.” I walked up to Russ again and yanked the ice pick out of his abdomen. Sauntering over to Jake and his practice doll, I tossed it to him when I got closer. “Your turn.”

Jake shifted it in his hand, getting a good grip on the slick handle. Gesturing to Nora’s waist with the bloody point, he glanced at me every so often to make sure he was on the right track. “Liver, stomach, spleen. Kidneys and intestines.”

“And where’s the aorta?” I prompted.

“Here.” He pointed, poking Nora just enough so she sucked her stomach in, trying to get away from him. She moaned through her gag, tears and snot running down her red, blotchy face.

“Bravissimo.” I inclined my head to him. “The rest is up to you. You can decide how fast, or slow, you want their death to be. Seconds? Minutes? Days? Strike accordingly. For funsies, you can always throw a bit of poison into the mix like I did.”

Jake’s gaze turned hateful. “This bitch should suffer for days for all the things she said about Leander. She’s supposed to be a nurse, for fuck’s sake. What kind of nurse treats her patients like garbage?”

“Then aim low, kid.” A wicked smile curled my lips. “Let her turn septic and die in agony, thinking about all the ways she’s a terrible human being.”

Nodding, Jake drove the ice pick beneath her belly button and left it in, tossing a disgusted look at Russ.“What about him?”

I gauged the pool of blood beneath him and the steady dripping from his beer gut. “Oh, his stomach acid and all of those digestive juices are going to wreak havoc on his organs.” Taking a step closer to Russ, I bent my head toward him, speaking directly into his ear. “Do you know what it means to get sepsis?”

He grunted, but didn’t say anything.

“First you’ll get a fever,” I continued, softly. “Your heart will race and your breathing will become labored. You’ll grow weak as chills rack your body, unable to save itself from the poison in your blood. And then your organs will fail, one by one.” I seized a fistful of his hair and yanked his head back. “It will be excruciating.”

I shoved his head to the side as I stepped away. Frowning at Jake, I ran my hands over my abdomen. “Are you hungry? Leander got me thinking about food so now I’m starving.”

He chuckled and made a vague, unhelpful gesture. “I mean...”

“Good. Let’s go get something to eat.”

“What about them?” Jake glanced at our two captives with a raised brow.

“Oh. Shit.” I turned to face the pair, gesturing between them while I spoke with utter seriousness. “Do you think you guys will be ok hanging out until we get back? Yeah? Cool.”

Jake busted out with a real laugh. He clamped a hand over his mouth, as if he surprised himself, and looked at me with wide eyes.

Snickering, I threw my arm around his shoulders and steered him toward the truck. “I think we’ve turned the corner, squirt.”

Instead of shrugging me off, he shook his head and rolled his eyes. “I guess you’re alright. But stop calling me ‘squirt.’”

“Aw, I appreciate the ringing endorsement, kiddo.”

Bennett

“Oh my God, Bennett! It’s too big!”

“Just a little bit more.”

“No, I can’t!”

“Just tilt your—”

“We have to stop.”

Sighing, I dropped my end of the desk and stared at Dorian impatiently. “This is why I told you to let the movers handle it.”
