Jerome nodded slowly, a smile spreading across his face. “And your man is clearly bisexual.”

I huffed a sigh, shaking my head and staring wistfully into the distance. “They get such a bad rap when all they want is a little love. Is that so much to ask for?”

“Thebigotryyou must face on a daily basis. And then, when you finally find happiness, the system comes to smack you down.”

“Would be a real shame if the ACLU got involved... That’s the kind of press our ‘noble profession’ doesn’t need.” I shook my head solemnly.

“All because of a crazy, vindictive ex.” Jerome shook his head too.

“What a waste of time for the ARDC, a strain on your limited resources, needless stress on my fellow professionals. A political firestorm no one wants to weather.”

His smile stretched wider. “Sounds like you got your ducks in a row, after all.”

“Speaking of rows... do you think I should go with the club level seats or fifty-yard-line for the Bears/Saints game?” I asked, idly spinning the onyx ring on my forefinger.

He tapped his chin in thought. “Club level. Always.”

I snapped, feigning disappointment. “Damn. I just remembered I’m not going to be in town that day. I sure hope I can find someone to use those tickets...”

We exchanged a sly look before breaking down into laughter. Outwardly, I was relieved to have this little problem sorted out. Inwardly, I was fucking fuming.

Bennett

“The stars are beautiful tonight.”

The windshield I was laying on provided the perfect angle to reflect on the vastness above me. It was amazing how much you could see outside Chicago without all of the lights polluting your view. It was like Easton. As backwater as that town was, the beauty of it was undeniable.

Leander sighed in my ear. “Why did I stay here again?”

I laughed, switching the phone to my other ear. “Because you hate Chicago and one night won’t kill either of us.”

“Yes, but snuggling with Annabel isn’t quite the same.” There was a quiet squeak in the background. I’m sure the princess perked up when she heard her name and was currently in the process of ramming her head into him, soaking up all the love and affection she wanted without me around as competition. “Although, she doesn’t steal my pillow.”

“Mine fell off the bed.”

“Heaven forbid you pick it up.”

“Alright, you caught me. It was just an excuse to get closer to you.”

“You don’t need an excuse, you know. Wearemarried.”

I laughed, bending one leg to relieve some of the pressure on my back from where the wiper blades were digging in. “Did you ever thinkthatwould happen?”

“Getting married? Or married toyou?”

“Both.”

He inhaled and exhaled softly. “It’s as I’ve said, I never imagined finding someone like you. And then to realize how much you meant to me? It terrified me.”

“You’re such a romantic. How couldyouever be terrified of love?”

“Reading about such things is entirely different than experiencing them. Even now, I can’t fully articulate how much you mean to me, Bennett. And I didn’t think a feeling like that could ever be reciprocated, not for someone like me, from someone like you.”

“You? Imaginemysurprise. I was in awe of you the first time I met you. I didn’t think I ever stood a chance of actuallybeingwith you, let alone calling you my husband.” Hell, I never thought I’d get married at all. You had to have a relationship first and those were something I didn’t waste my time on, until Leander.

He scoffed. “I mean, I thought I dropped enough hints. I didn’t realize I had to literally spell it out for you.”
