The crisp air made me forget what was to come, and I became lost in the beauty of this place.

The lush trees swayed with the wind, all moving in sync. The sound of animals surrounding us, birds chirping, paws hitting the ground. Not from running away or fighting. They were just living here, in peace.

I took it all in and more as I let my fingers brush through the bushes, trail over the trees, wanting to feel everything with my own touch.

But slowly, the trees around us changed. The density lightened and barren ground showed itself.

Finlay didn’t slow, his strides only picked up, and I jogged slightly to remain by him. Were these the scars he mentioned before?

“What happened here?” I asked, my skin prickling by the sudden harsh wind.

“Isaac,” he replied.

The ground beneath me was hardened, as if it was frozen but there wasn’t snow, or ice layered on top of it. Nothing grew here, not an animal lived here.

It looked like death.

“This is it.” We stood at what seemed an entranced to a hollow passage into the mountain.

“You want me to go in there.” I had watched enough movies to know not to go into a small dark opening.

“She is waiting for you.” He turned and left me as I stood rooted on the spot. Dreading what was to come, I stepped into the hollow.

The darkness around me made it impossible to see anything but I pushed through, hoping to find a light. Something to guide me.

My balance faltered, and I tripped over my own feet. A coldness spread inside me and a whimper followed. The mate bond was changing, a feeling that was too familiar. A feeling I hoped I would never sense again.

Rubbing my chest to soothe the rising pain, I couldn’t help and let the tears fall. He couldn’t be leaving me, he had to come get me. He was the only hope I had left. All I wanted was him in this life.

“If Isaac is dead, will you accept William as your mate?” A female voice I hadn’t heard before echoed off the stone walls, and I stiffened in fear.

Wringing my cold hands together, I let her words sink in. Even though I already knew the answer, it wasn’t a simple question. And still, with everything Derek and Finlay told me, my response stayed the same.

“Never.”

No one could replace him, the love I felt for him. I already knew and experienced how my life would be without him in it and if he wasn’t coming back. If this sense of emptiness inside me kept spreading, I would follow Isaac into the afterlife. I didn’t want to be alive without him.

The icy layer within me slowly faded and so did the darkness around me.

The woman stood in front of me. Long white-grey hair flowed down her body. Bright green eyes stared back at me as I rose to my feet. A smile tilted on her full lips.

The left corner of her lip was a tad above the other side, and I knew who had the same way of smiling. A grin I had seen enough times before.

“What are you to Isaac?”

“I’m his mother.”

I was lost for words; I didn’t know if I should be angry at her for working against Isaac or stunned that I was meeting her.

I really wanted to be mad but there was this peace and kindness that radiated from her and all I wanted was to edge closer and hug her. What was that about?

“You aren’t a witch,” I said, sure of my words.

I hated that smile on her and how it widened. “I’m not, they think I am.”

“Then what are you?”

Amusement filled her gaze. “Normally, when I show my true self—” she paused, waving her hand around as if I was missing something very important. “They know.”
