But then again, they had the right to do so. They did it within the rules.

The fucking rules.

“It wasn’t an easy task.” He laughed, shifting on his feet. “Gregory is searching for you. They know you are still alive. It is only a matter of time. And to find you here of all places.” He shook his head and looked around.

“Explain, Emlyn,” I snapped.

His laughter died down, and a heavy sigh escaped him. “It was far before your time, Isaac. It doesn’t matter now. But we should talk. Somewhere in private.” His eyes drifted to Joanne, or at least he tried to meet her gaze but she remained hidden.

The small tremble in her body against mine made me gulp. I didn’t want her to be afraid. I wouldn’t let anything happen to her.

“Maybe she fears you will get yourself killed again,” Logan muttered. And my hands balled into fists. I didn’t get myself killed.

Deep breaths. Deep breaths.

Turning on my heel, I took Joanne’s hand and headed back to where we had left the car. I didn’t wait for Emlyn to follow us, but the soft footsteps told me enough. I only heard his, so it seemed he wasn’t lying when he told us he was here alone.

The others had already headed to the woods to scout the place out, and I gestured for Emlyn to get in the car.

“Alone,” Emlyn said. And I glanced at Joanne. She gave me a reassuring smile and slowly nodded.

“I will just be outside, nothing will happen to me. I promise.” Her words eased my nerves, and I fully believed her.

It was stupid. But I stepped into the driver’s seat, closed the door behind me with a bang, and waited for Emlyn to spit it out.

“An heir, Isaac. That is all you need and then we can take everything from Gregory and his fucking son.” The anger in his voice was something I wasn’t used to coming from him.

“What’s in it for you?”

Pinching the bridge of his nose, he mumbled something under his breath.

“Your father was an ass.” He sighed and leaned back. “There is much you don’t know about your bloodline; I believe that’s why you were brought back. I don’t have all the answers. You wouldn’t even believe me if I told you. But you are not only an Alpha, or a wolf. You belong on the throne.”

The throne.

Did he mean?

Goosebumps rose on my skin, my muscles twitched, and Logan edged to the surface.

“It doesn’t exist, Emlyn.” It was part of fairy tales now, stories every pup heard and grew up with. Not knowing if it was a story from our past or fiction. A land where all the creatures lived in peace and a king and queen ruled them all.

“It’s lost, but it’s time, Isaac. Now that you found your tr—” he cleared his throat, erasing his last word before starting again. “Found your mate.”

He eyed Joanne, and I expected something else. But it seemed he was proud. Glad to see her.

“She is human.” I hated that I said it, but I wanted to know more. I didn’t care what she was, as long as she was with me.

The corner of his lip trembled slightly, almost undetectable. And it made my patience run thin.

“Trust in the moon goddess Isaac,” he sighed, sounding defeated.

“Emlyn, you still haven’t answered my question. What’s in it for you?”

He gulped, a storm of emotions raged through his eyes. A soft flicker to his wolf showed itself.

“I made a promise to your mother a long time ago. One I haven’t fulfilled, until now.” My mother? He knew my mother? Not even my father would speak her name, always pretending as if he didn’t know who had birthed me.

Was she still alive?
