He always listened, and this was the proof of it. As Isaac agreed, we were heading west. William, of course, argued, feeling the same as Isaac. Believing it’s a trap.

And the worst part, I didn’t want to leave yet. Wanting to head back into the forest to find Mr. Smoke. I snorted, finding the nickname I gave the mysterious stranger quite funny. It was fitting though.

My brows knitted together, the same familiar feeling as yesterday came to the surface and when I saw the old wooden town sign, I knew for sure.

I have been here before.

With my family.

On our camping trips. It all came back.

The same trip every year. My father and brother were inseparable, while my mother and I made sure we had everything we needed.

“Please dad, why can’t I come?”

“Hunting isn’t something you would like.”

I grumbled, crossing my arms. “Well, maybe it is.”

The simple words flooded my mind, and I struggled to keep the tears at bay.

“Hey, pumpkin, we want to show you something,”my father’s voice filled my mind again, and a stray tear fell down my cheek.

It was our last trip together, and that time he finally dared to take me with him. Take me further into the woods.

I thought he had given in to my relentless questions and was finally showing me what they did when they went hunting.

Hunting without any gear. I scoffed and then a smile crept onto my lips. They were hunting in their wolf form. That must be it.

“Isn’t Derek coming?”I followed behind my father, staying close behind him and realized my brother wasn’t with us.

“No need, I already brought him there.” He scanned his surroundings like he always did, no matter where we were. As if he was waiting for someone to jump out of hiding.

I always found it weird, even teasing him about it when I was younger. But now, I know better. I knew the dangers that hid in the shadows. Lurking, waiting to make their move.

Darkness fell on the thick forest, and I shivered when a cold breeze brushed past me. The trail we followed suddenly stopped and there was nothing more to follow. Only one way, and that was to go back.

“I need you to remember this, pumpkin.”

And then, nothing.

Clenching my eyes shut, forcing my mind to go back. Needing more, begging for more.

Nothing.

However, there was one thing I knew. I had to find that spot. I needed to remember. Because I hoped that there would be the answers I searched for.

With a sigh, I wished I was right. Or maybe I was once again putting faith in something I shouldn’t.

William’s grumpiness brought me back, and I realized they were arguing. Yet again.

The town didn’t look the same as I remembered. The once vibrant flowers, the busy main street, the cute little boutiques. It was all gone. Deserted. Only a few remained open, like the grocery store and the doctor’s office. However, that was it.

“What kind of town is this? There isn’t even a fucking motel here.”

I couldn’t remember there ever being one here, but the drastic change here made me wonder what had happened.

When Laila suggested heading to the next town, I almost screamed my words.
