Page 18 of Trusting Thorn

Oakland’s eyes come to mine, and I see the shock.

I shrug, choosing to ignore it. It’s fast, I know, but it feels right. The last thing I want to do is scare her off, but I know what Mila is feeling; I feel it too.

"This is good," I say a few minutes later around a mouthful of pancakes.

Oakland's lip turns up at the corner. "Thanks."

Breakfast goes by in a blur as I listen to the girl talking back and forth about the fall festival their school is putting on in a few weeks. I’m just about to get up to help Oakland clear the table when the doorbell rings. Oakland looks at me and I shrug. I don’t have a clue who’d be stopping by this early.

“I’ll get it.” I push away from the table.

When I get to the door and open it, my sister and her partner are standing there with knowing looks on their faces.

"Surprise!" Kelly grins. "We thought we'd stop by."

"Hey, sis.” I pull Kelly into a hug and then turn to her partner. “Sara," I nod, stepping aside to let them in. “Who told you?”

“Does it matter?” Kelly sasses from behind me.

I guess not. My sister is thick as thieves with some of the old ladies, so it doesn’t surprise me they’ve been gossiping.

"Aunt Kelly! Aunt Sara!" Mila squeals when she sees who’s behind me. In a flash, she jumps up from her chair and rushes over to greet them.

Oakland looks up, her eyes as round as saucers. Quickly, she jumps to her feet and tugs at the hem of my tee. “Oh, God. I’m so sorry,” she rushes out, a blush creeping across her cheeks. “I didn't realize Thorn was expecting company.”

I clear my throat, trying not to laugh. “Baby, this is my sister Kelly and her wife Sara. Kelly, Sara, this is Oakland and her daughter Morgan.”

Kelly's eyebrows shoot up, her gaze darting between Oakland and me. “Baby, huh?” she says, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. “I didn't realize my brother was dating again.”

Sara, shooting Kelly a frown, steps around her wife and offers Oakland a warm smile. “It's lovely to meet you, Oakland. And you too, Morgan.”

Oakland relaxes a bit, returning Sara's smile. "It's nice to meet you both as well. I'm sorry about..." she gestures to her lack of pants, "this. We had a bit of an unexpected sleepover last night."

"Don't worry about it," Kelly waves her hand dismissively, changing her tactic. "We're the ones who showed up unannounced. Although," she adds with a mischievous glint inher eye, "I'm beginning to think our timing couldn't have been better."

I shoot her a warning look, which she purposely ignores.

“So," Sara says, clapping her hands together. “With it being a three day weekend, we were hoping to have a girls’ movie night.”

Mila gasps, her eyes light up before she starts bouncing on her toes. "Can me and Morgan go, Daddy?"

I glance at Oakland. “It’s fine with me if it’s okay with her mom.”

“I don't know. Morgan doesn't have any clothes here."

“She can wear some of mine,” Mila rushes out helpfully.

“We'd really love for her to join us. We do this every year with Mila and it's a lot of fun.”

"Please, Mommy!” Morgan begs softly, her hands clasped together in front of her.

Oakland bites her lip, thinking it over then looks back at Sara. “Are you sure?”

“We're positive,” Kelly adds, wrapping her arm around Sara's shoulders.

"Yay!" both girls cheer before taking off up the stairs.

"I'm gonna go help them," Oakland says as she glances down at her bare legs again.
